During the next few months, C8 fluorocarbon resins that have been applied up to now will disappear from the markets for ecological reasons. It would have been possible to continue the C8 technology up to the year 2015, however, most manufacturers have announced the phase out by end of this year or next year. The textile users face the challenge to find out and select the suitable C6 products in order to provide the current level of water- and oil repellency performance as well as the same quality of other effects. The concentrated fluorocarbon resin Anthydrin SC is an universal product for starting with the C6 chemistry because it produces excellent effects on different fibre materials so that the quality level of the products the final textile users have become accustomed to is maintained. We present a novel and facile method for the design of biocompatible microgel-modified microfibers loaded with ZnO nanoparticles capable of zinc ion release under physiological conditions. The microfibers consist of three materials hierarchically assembled in a controlled and reproducible way. We synthesized poly(N-vinylcaprolactam-co-itaconic acid) aqueous microgels with carboxylic groups located in the microgel core. The obtained microgels can be loaded with various amounts of ZnO nanoparticles by in-situ growth of ZnO in microgels. As shown by electrophoretic mobility and TEM measurements, ZnO nanoparticles are selectively loaded in the microgel core and stabilized by itaconic acid groups bearing strong negative charges. ZnO-loaded microgels were used as functional additive to produce poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) microfibers using the electrospinning process. The resulting microfibers consist of a PCL core coated with the microgels located at the surface of the fibers. The variation of the ZnO amount loaded into microgels allows regulating the ZnO content in microfibers and gives the possibility to tune the released amount of zinc ions in aqueous medium at pH 7.5 and 37 °C. We demonstrate that the obtained functional microfibers are biocompatible and non-toxic, thus being good candidates for biomedical applications like scaffolds for tissue engineering, biointerface coatings or wound closing dressings. © 2015 Elsevier Ltd. Modern underwear and brassieres are made of mostly of polyamide/elastane materials. The increasing importance of microfiber articles with a high proportion of elastane is contingent on the extraordinarily high functionality and the versatile usage properties of these goods. Such fabrics combine high wearing comfort with fashionable design, but put the textile finisher before big challenges. Above all, for ladies' underwear, the textile finishing must make sure that the basic knitted fabrics such as lace match with the corresponding small ribbons with regard to color tone, fastness and protection from yellowing.
