We addressed the application of hydraulic drive in Roots vacuum pump. The advantages of hydraulic drive over the conventional drives, such as the direct drive, belt drive and magnetic drive, were discussed. The impact of the various factors, including but not limited to the hydraulic coupler, shaft sealing, hydraulic drive oil, overload coefficient and torque factor of impeller, on the performance of Roots pump were evaluated. The hydraulic coupler, a torque-limiting, static-pressure discharging type(with choke plate), was applied to Roots pump and tested. Appropriate modifications were made to satisfy the strict requirements of torque limiting. The test results show that the newly-developed hydraulic drive makes it possible for Roots pump to work under optimized conditions: for example, its operation at full capacity, starting of its motor under almost no-load, and over-load protection of both motor and Roots pump. ©, 2014, Science Press.
