Various air pollutants generated by motor vehicles running in road tunnel have seriously affected the driving sight distance and physical health of drivers, and thus the air purification in tunnel is urgently needed. In this paper, by comparing and analyzing of tunnel air purification technologies at domestic and foreign, the mechanisms, effects and engineering applications of those technologies are reviewed. It is found that the combined technology of electrostatic precipitator and activated carbon absorbing nitrogen is the most widely used one for road tunnel air purification in the world. This technology features mature, reliable and excellent effects in air purification but its investment and operating costs are rather high. So far, the photo-catalytic air purification technology has been solely utilized in Rome Umberto tunnel project in Italy, with lower investment and operating costs but poor purification efficiency. Other purification technologies such as soil method and catalytic oxidation method, etc, are still in laboratory investigation stage without engineering practices. ©, 2015, Editorial Office of "Modern Tunnelling Technology".
