Dyeing wastewater contains large amounts of residual dyes, and leads to a threat to the ecological environment. The laccase is able to oxidize a wide range of textile dyes, it has been recognized as an ideal candidate for dyeing wastewater treatment. To exploit the effective treatment process of dyeing wastewater based on enzyme technology, we tested the decolorization ability of the commercial laccase SUKALaccTM toward five common textile dyes, this enzyme exhibited decolorization efficiency over 14.85% to 85.97% for these test dyes. Some factors such as enzyme concentration, dye concentration, temperature and pH were evaluated in order to determine the optimum conditions for the enzyme performance. Finally, the dye toxicity test with Scenedesmus obliquus and Daphnia magna showed that there was a reduction in toxicity after the enzymatic treatment. These experimental results pave the substantial way for the practical application of laccase for dyeing wastewater treatment in the future. ©, 2015, Science Press. All right reserved.

The widespread application of the conventional activated sludge treatment process has been employed to deal with a variety of municipal and industrial sewage. However, it also generates a large quantity of excess sludge. To exploit an economical and efficient technology for sludge reduction, we evaluated the effect of solubilization and reduction of activated sludge by a combined treatment using citric acid and enzyme (protease, cellulose and lipase were added individually or in combination). The flask test experiments indicated that the solubilization of sludge improved by 30% after the citric acid treatment. The mixture of the three enzymes resulted in a 33.6% reduction in solids. Further sludge reduction experimentation was conducted using the bench-scale equipment, by adding citric acid and complex enzymes. The results showed that the settleability and concentration of the sludge decreased by 24.3% and 26.6%, respectively, while the removal efficiency of COD did not decrease significantly. Through the microscopic observation of sludge, it was found that the sludge morphology had been changed after the citric acid and complex enzyme treatment, with the flocs having a loose structure and small volume. © 2017, Science Press.
