Estimating quality of life (QoL) in patients with breast cancer is of importance in assessing treatment outcomes. Adjuvant endocrine therapy is widely used for hormone receptor-positive (HR+) early-stage breast cancer (EBC), and evidence suggests that aromatase inhibitors (AIs) may improve QoL for these patients. This study evaluated QoL in postmenopausal Chinese patients with HR+ EBC taking AIs.This was a prospective, multicenter, and observational study that had no intent to intervene in the current treatment of recruited patients. Eligible patients were recruited within 7 days of beginning adjuvant treatment with AIs. The Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Breast (FACT-B) scale was used to evaluate the patients QoL. Data were collected at baseline and at 6, 12, 18, and 24 months.From June 2010 to October 2013, a total of 494 patients with HR+ EBC were recruited from 21 centers. There was a 7.51-point increase in the patients mean FACT-B trial outcome index (TOI), from 90.69 at baseline to 98.72 at 24 months (P<.0001). The mean TOI scores at baseline, 6, 12, and 18 months were 90.69, 94.36, 97.71, and 96.75, respectively (P<.0001, for all). The mean (FACT-B) emotional well-being subscale scores at baseline, 6, 12, 18, and 24 months were 16.32, 16.55, 17.34 (P<.0001), 17.47 (P<.0001), and 17.85 (P<.0001), respectively, and social well-being scores were 18.61, 19.14 (P<.04), 19.35 (P<.008), 18.32, and 18.40, respectively. In the mixed model, baseline TOI, clinical visits, prior chemotherapies, age group, and axillary lymph-node dissection presented statistically significant effects on the change of FACT-B TOI and FACT-B SWB, whereas only baseline TOI, clinical visits, and prior chemotherapies presented statistically significant effects on the change of FACT-B EWB. FACT-B TOI, being the most pertinent and precise indicator of patient-reported QoL, demonstrated significant changes reflecting clinical benefit of adjuvant AIs endocrine therapy in the QoL of HR+EBC patients.The study demonstrated significant improvements in the long-term QoL of postmenopausal Chinese patients with HR+ EBC at 6, 12, 18, and 24 months after starting treatment with AIs. The current study indicates improved long-term QoL with AI adjuvant treatment, which will aid clinicians in optimizing treatment to yield effective healthcare outcomes.Clinicaltrials.gov NCT01144572.

Goals A simplified Chinese version of EORTC QLQH& N35 was developed using strict translation procedures according to EORTC translation guidelines. Psychometric properties were evaluated. Patients and methods Three instruments (QLQ-H&N35, QLICP-HN, and FACT-H&N) were used in a sample of 133 patients with head and neck cancer at the time of their admission to the hospital. Each patient was assessed for the second time 1-2 days after hospitalization so that the test-retest reliability could be calculated. A sub-sample of patients was sampled and measured for the third time at discharge in order to evaluate the responsiveness. Results Correlation analysis among domains and items of the three instruments showed good construct validity and criterion-related validity. Comparisons of QLQ-H&N35 between treatment groups and age groups supported clinical validity. The internal consistency reliability measured by Cronbach's coefficient ? was greater than 0.70 for all multiitem domains, and test-retest reliability coefficients for all domains were greater than 0.80, ranging from 0.88 to 0.95. Score changes between pre- and post-treatment were observed in 6 out of 18 domains, with effect size SRM ranging from 0.27 to 0.87. Conclusions The simplified Chinese version of QLQH& N35 demonstrates good validity, reliability, and responsiveness and can be used to measure QOL for Chinese patients with head and neck cancer. © 2011 Springer-Verlag.

Objective To assess the effectiveness and safety of high-dose chemotherapy assisted with autologous peripheral blood stem cell treatment (APBSCT+HDC) for small cell lung cancer (SCLC). Methods The databases such as MEDLINE (1970 to January 2011), EMBASE (1980 to January 2011), Science Direct (1980 to January 2011), The Cochrane Library (Issue 3, 2010), CNKI (from the date of establishment to December 2010), CBM (from the date of establishment to December 2010) and Wanfang database (from the date of establishment to December 2010) were searched for collecting randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on APBSCT+HDC for SCLC. According to the inclusive and exclusive criteria, the trials were screened, the data were extracted, the methodological quality was assessed, and then Meta-analysis was conducted by using RevMan 5.0 software. Results A total of 6 RCTs involving 737 patients with SCLC were included. The results of Meta-analyses were as follows: the APBSCT+HDC for SCLC was significantly superior to the conventional chemotherapy in the total effective rate (RR=1.14, 95%CI 1.07 to 1.21, P<0.000 1) and the overall survival rate (RR=3.74, 95%CI 2.13 to 6.58, P<0.000 01), and it was superior in reducing the incidence of III/IV grade red blood cell reduction (RR=1.97, 95%CI 1.15 to 3.38, P=0.01) and thrombopenia (RR=1.93, 95%CI 1.06 to 3.54, P=0.03) with significant differences; but there was no significant difference between the two groups in reducing the incidence of III/IV leukopenia. Conclusions Compared with the conventional chemotherapy, APBSCT+HDC treatment for SCLC can improve the overall effective rate and overall survival rate, but it can also increase the risks of severe hematologic toxic reaction. Because of the small scale and low quality of the included studies, this conclusion still needs to be confirmed by high-quality, large-scale and multi-centered RCTs.

Purpose: To develop and validate a quality of life (QOL) instrument for patients with colorectal cancer, QLICP-CR. Methods: Using the programmed decision method and the theory in instrument development, the QLICP-CR was developed and evaluated based on the data measuring QOL thrice from a sample of 110 inpatients of colorectal cancer. Results: The internal consistency α and the test-retest reliability for the overall scale and domains are above 0.70 and 0.79, respectively; the score differences between pretreatment and posttreatment have statistical significance for three domains and the overall instrument, with higher Standardized Response Mean of 0.61, 0.62, 1.33, and 0.80. Conclusions: The QLICP-CR is of good validity, reliability, and responsiveness. © 2012 Informa Healthcare USA, Inc.

Emerging evidence from preclinical and clinical studies has shown that interleukin-12 (IL-12) has some effectiveness against endogenously arising brain tumor. The aim of this study was to investigate interactions of IL-12A and IL-12B polymorphisms on the risk of brain tumor. We analyzed IL-12A rs2243115 and IL-12B rs3212227 polymorphisms in 170 patients with brain tumor and 222 healthy controls in a Chinese population using a polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism assay and DNA sequencing method. Individuals carrying a G allele of IL-12A rs2243115 had a significantly higher risk of developing brain tumor compared with those carrying a T allele (odds ratio [OR]=2.01, 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.17-3.45). After stratification analysis according to tumor types, a similarly higher risk was detected in patients with glioma (OR=2.56, 95% CI, 1.25-5.21). When gene-gene interactions were examined, carriers at both loci rs2243115 TG/GG and rs3212227 AC/CC had a 2.62-fold increased risk of glioma compared with those with rs2243115 TT and rs3212227 AC/CC genotypes (OR=2.62, 95% CI, 1.05-6.50). This study provides evidence that IL-12A rs2243115 may be associated with the risk of brain tumor. Additionally, gene-gene interactions of IL-12A rs2243115 and IL-12B rs3212227 may contribute to brain tumor susceptibility. © Copyright 2012, Mary Ann Liebert, Inc. 2012.

Quality of life for patients with head and neck is now concerned worldwide, but the available QOL instruments are seldom and lack of Chinese culture. Therefore, this paper aimed to develop and validate a QOL instrument for patients with head and neck cancer, QLICP-HN. Using the programmed decision methods and the theory in instrument development, the QLICP-HN was developed and evaluated based on the data measuring QOL three times before and after treatment from a sample of 133 in-patients of head and neck cancer. The psychometric properties of the scale were evaluated by indicators such as validity and reliability coefficients: Cronbach α, Pearson r, standardized response mean. The statistical methods included Pearson correlation, multi-trait scaling analysis, factor analysis, cluster analysis and paired t test. The internal consistency α for the overall scale and domains is above 0.70 with the exception of the social function (0.65) and common symptom and side effect (0.66); the test-retest reliability for each domain and the overall scale is higher than 0.80; most correlation coefficients between each item and its domain are above 0.40; the scores differences between pre-treatment and post-treatment have statistical significance for three domains of physical, psychological, the specific, and the overall instrument, with higher SRM of 0.33, 0.59, 0.44 and 0.53. The QLICP-HN is of good validity, reliability and responsiveness, and can be used to assess quality of life for patients with head and neck cancer in China. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd. Paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH) is an acquired hematopoietic stem cell clone disorder, and it is difficult to identify the difference between the untypical case of PNH and myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). In current study, we described a case of PNH patient initially diagnosed as MDS and accepted treatment for 8 years, while lagging pathological symptoms of CD55/CD59 deficiency and soy urine was detected, the patient was eventually confirmed the diagnosis of PNH. After received treatment of blood transfusion, corticosteroid injection, as well as basification of urine, the disease progression of the patient was suppressed which manifested with soy urine turn to clear and white blood cell (WBC), hemoglobin (Hb) as well as platelet (Plt) recovered completely. This case shows that untypical PNH tend to be easily misdiagnosed as MDS. Furthermore, it points out the potential effective methods of differentiation and diagnosis of PNH and MDS. © 2016, E-Century Publishing Corporation. All rights reserved.

Establishing a new bio-mathematical model, named quantitative LQ-based (qLQB) model, that can evaluate the radio-toxicity of lung. We assume that each Function Subunit (FSU) of lung is equal and representative in functional status. Based on the Linear-Quadratic model (LQ model), we had derived a model to calculate the ratio/percent (R/P) between damaged cell/FSU and entire cell/FSU of lung for radiation dose response. We can analyse radiation pneumonia probability (RPP) based on the R/P. Forty-five 3D plans from forty-five randomly selected lung cancer patients were generated using the ELEKTA precise 2.12 treatment planning system. The qLQB was tested against the widely used Lyman-Kutcher-Burman model (LKB model). There was no distinct statistical difference in analyzing RPP between using the qLQB model and the LKB model (p = 0.412). The proposed qLQB model was found to be efficient and reliable for analyzing RPP.

To establish a new method for detection of red blood cell osmotic fragility by using flow cytometry.The hypotension salt solution of different concentrations (0.70 ml normal saline+0.3 ml deionized water, 0.60 ml normal saline+0.40 ml deionized water and 0.55 ml normal saline+0.45 ml deionized water) were prepared with normal saline and deionized water, in which the red blood cells were suspended, and the residual red blood cells were detected by flow cytometer.There was no significant difference in percentage of residual red blood cells between different time points detected by flow cytometer in 3 different hypotonic salt solutions. The percentage of residual red blood cells in B+C+D+E+F+G detected time region was different among 3 NaCl dilution groups. The percentage of residual red blood cells in normal control was lower than that in hemoglobinopathy group. The percentage of residual red blood cells in hereditary spherocytosis (HS) group was obviously lower than that in hemoglobinopathy and normal control groups. The comparison of 3 different dilution concentrations found that the second concentration (0.60 ml normal saline+0.40 ml deionized water) is more suitable to screen HS by FC500 flow cytometer.The detection of red cell osmotic fragility by using flow cytometry is a simple, rapid, objective and economic way that can be an effective screening method for diagnose the HS.
