We studied the effect of Fe2+ on hemolysin synthesis by Staphylococcus aureus. Hemolytic activity of staphylococci was shown to be iron-dependent. Addition of Fe2+ to the nutrient medium induced the synthesis of α-hemolysin by staphylococci. Increasing the concentration of Fe2+ was followed by an increase in hemolytic activity of staphylococci. Inducible synthesis of α-hemolysin probably serves as an important pathogenetic factor in the development of staphylococcal infection in patients with excessive iron accumulation in the body. © 2012 Springer Science+Business Media, Inc.

The results of geodensity, geothermal, and paleotectonic modeling of some sedimentary depressions in the Far East region and central West Siberia are interpreted from a petroleum-geological standpoint. The prospects of the possibly oil-and-gas-bearing Paleogene and Upper Cretaceous rock complexes in the Lunsk, Makarovsk, and Aniva troughs, West Sakhalin uplift, and Middle Amur intermontane depression are estimated. Petroleum accumulation zones in the preplate complex are forecasted. Localization of Jurassic oil generation centers is defined at a new large oil field in the central West Siberian plate (West Siberian plate). Experience in petroleum geology modeling for structures of different tectonic patterns, lithologies, and rock ages makes it possible to recommend the adopted methodical approach and technology of gravimetric and geothermal interpretation as universal and efficient methods. © 2011 Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

The effect of edge boundary layers on the stress-strain properties of a tensioned multilayer composite bar whose depth-to-width ratio is much less than unity is evaluated. The investigation is carried out by solving a 3D elasticity problem in the Saint-Venant statement. Simple relations for calculating the rigidity of the composite bar and the components of stress tensor are derived. The formulas for stresses are valid almost everywhere in the bar, except in narrow boundary layers close to its ends and longitudinal edges. © 2010 Springer Science+Business Media, Inc.

The feasibility of processing heavy-oil resid by mechanochemical action is explored. It is shown that hydrocarbon destruction and condensation processes occur in equal measure. The n-paraffins C 6-C 16 are subject to destruction, and the condensation processes are associated with alkylation of aromatic hydrocarbons by paraffin-destruction products. C 16+ paraffins are formed during mechanochemical destruction of the paraffins. © 2012 Springer Science+Business Media, Inc.
