The reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization is one of living radical polymerizations. In this study, four different 9. H-fluoren-9-yl benzodithiolates (FBDTs) were synthesized, and used along with azobis(isobutyronitrile) (AIBN), a radical initiator, in polymerization of styrene (ST) at the molar ratio of 3:1. This new transfer agent exhibited the typical characteristic living free radical polymerization behaviors such as good control of molecule weight and narrow molecule weight distribution. It was concluded that the FBDTs can be used as the RAFT agents in free radical polymerization of vinyl monomers. © 2011 The Korean Society of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry.

In order to mitigate problems associated with highly sulfonated aromatic hydrocarbon membranes, such as dimensional stability, mechanical strength, and methanol crossover, sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) membranes containing 1,6-bis(4-vinylphenyl)hexane (BVPH) were crosslinked by EB irradiation. Compared to the pristine SPEEK membrane, the crosslinked membranes exhibited significantly improved dimensional stability, chemical stability, and mechanical strength. The crosslinking procedure slightly reduced the proton conductivity of the membranes. The crosslinking of SPEEK with BVPH was also found to slightly reduce the proton conductivity of the membranes, but significantly reduced the methanol permeability. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd.

In this study, sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) was very efficiently crosslinked via a Friedel-Craft reaction using 1,6-dibromohexane and AlCl3. The resulting crosslinked SPEEK (c-SPEEK) membranes exhibited improved dimensional stability, thermal and chemical stability, and mechanical strength with slight reduction in the elongation. The methanol permeability was reduced by approximately two orders of magnitude by the crosslinking reaction. The proton conductivities of c-SPEEK membranes were greater than Nafion-212 in the temperature range of 30-90°C. Overall, this new crosslinking method can be conveniently and efficiently applicable to most aromatic hydrocarbon polymer membranes. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to discuss the distribution characteristics and the anatomical angioarchitecture of cutaneous branches arising from the second dorsal metacarpal artery for the repair of small tissue defects in the hand or fingers using the second dorsal metacarpal artery chain-link flap. Methods: Fifteen fresh human cadaveric hands were studied using three methods: latex perfusion for microanatomical analysis, denaturation of material and vinyl chloride mixed packing for cast specimens, and latex perfusion creating pellucid specimens. Cutaneous perforators with a diameter of 0.2 mm or greater were evaluated using statistical analysis. Cluster analysis was conducted to determine the overall distribution of the perforators. Results: Two main clusters of perforators distributed at a relative distance of 40.8 and 68.6 % from the second web space edge to the midpoint of the second metacarpal bone as a unit. The Chi-square analysis revealed no significant differences in either the radial or ulnar side distribution of the cutaneous perforators from the second dorsal metacarpal artery (p = 0.779). Chain-links formed among adjacent perforators were parallel to the axis of the second metacarpal bone on the dorsum of the hand. Based on the anatomic characteristic, we designed the second dorsal metacarpal artery chain-link flap to recover the defect in the index finger. As a result, the patient was satisfied with the appearance and function. Conclusion: This study indicates that there are two main clusters of arterioles in the distal second dorsal metacarpal artery that can be helpful for the second dorsal metacarpal artery pedicle cutaneous chain-link perforator flaps in the repair of defects in the fingers. © 2014, Springer-Verlag France.

Stable nano-TiO2/polyurethane (PU) emulsions were prepared via in situ reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) emulsion polymerization of 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate (HEA)-capped PU macromonomer, using azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) as a radical initiator and 2-{[(butylsulfanyl) carbonothioyl]sulfanyl} propanoic acid (BCSPA) anchored onto TiO2 nanoparticles (TiO2-BCSPA) as a RAFT agent. When the molar ratio of AIBN to TiO2-BCSPA was changed from 1:3 to 1:10, the polydispersity index (PDI) of polymers in the emulsions decreased from 1.83 to 1.06, due to more effective RAFT polymerization in the emulsions. The TiO2 nanofillers were well-dispersed throughout the polymer films. The tensile strengths of the nanocomposite films were significantly enhanced due to coordination bonding between the TiO2 nanofillers and the -COOH end groups of the polymers, as evidenced by the FT-IR spectral data. © 2010 Elsevier B.V.

Objective: To evaluate the intermediate-term clinical efficacy and success rate of tunica vaginalis (TV) pedicle flap for reconstruction of bulbo-penile urethral stricture. Methods: We assessed the medical records of 15 male patients who had undergone TV pedicle flap urethroplasty for reconstruction of anterior urethral stricture between January 2006 and December 2011. The surgical outcome was assessed by comparison of four parameters including the maximum flow rate (Qmax), international prostate symptom score (IPSS), residual urine (RU) and quality of life (QOL) in all patients pre- and postoperatively. Moreover, pre- and postoperative retrograde urethrography films were compared in all patients. t-test was used for data analysis. Results: The mean patient age was 38.1 ± 9.3years (range: 25-55), mean stricture length was 4.2±1.1cm (range: 3-6.1cm), and the mean follow up time was 14.6±1.9months (range: 12-18)months. There was a statistically significant difference between Q(max), IPSS, RU and QOL pre- and postoperatively (P<0.01). The clinical success rate in this study was 86.6% (13/15). The early complication was one case of wound infection and subsequent wound dehiscence, one case of hematoma formation in another patient, which did not have any influence in the long-term clinical outcome. Conclusion: At intermediate-term follow up, TV pedicle flap urethroplasty has a high clinical success rate with low complication. However, a large clinical trial with long-term follow up is needed to confirm the result. © 2013 Wiley Publishing Asia Pty Ltd.
