Rock breaking technology is the core technology for oil and gas drilling and the focus of drilling engineering’s basic research. At present, all kinds of deep shocks are main downhole tools for improving ROP. For the problems of current shocks where core components are easily damaged, life is short, and speed is not obvious, so we designed a new type of pulsed axial impactor. The pulsed axial impactor allows longitudinal vibration while rotating, which can significantly improve the situation of drill bit and downhole nearby rocks and improve the drilling speed. By numerical analysis of tool strength, the pulse jet axial impact device works properly, has a reliable structure, achieves the aim of a simple structure, has no wearing parts and meets the basic requirements for extending the service life. © 2015 Taylor & Francis Group, London.
