Digital Signal Processing (DSP) is an important and growing subject area in Electrical/Computer Engineering (ECE), Computer Science and other Engineering/Science disciplines. Since 1997, the authors have taught an undergraduate DSP courses at Xinjiang University (XJU). While the subject of DSP has become very popular with ECE students and with the growing DSP job market, the subject matter is still considered to be a difficult and complex one for students. This paper presents an approach to teaching DSP basic concepts using a platform which developed by the tool, Macromedia Flash. The authors of XJU had enhanced the learning experience for their students by adding the platform to their class offering to reduce the difficulty of understanding the theoretical DSP. © 2011 Trans Tech Publications.

Energy-efficient Digital Signal Processing (DSP) is a significant and increasing subject area in many disciplines such as, Electrical/Computer Engineering (ECE), Communication Engineering, Computer Science and other Engineering/Science disciplines. With the growing of DSP job market, the energy-efficient DSP course has become very popular to ECE students, and it is still considered to be a difficult and complex one to study. Praat, speech analysis software, is proposed to apply in signal processing teaching in this paper. More DSP algorithms, even real-time signal processing algorithms are simulated by Praat and its script language that the object of using the software further enlarged to the signal processing area. The authors have enhanced the learning experience for their students by using the software during the teaching, and reduced the difficulty in understanding of energy-efficient DSP theories and algorithms. © Sila Science.

Handwritten signature identification technology has been studied extensively in many languages, but there are few previous reports have been published on Uyghur handwritten signatures. Combined multifeatures based identification method was proposed for off-line Uyghur handwritten signatures in this paper. The signature images were preprocessed using techniques adapted to the Uyghur signature, firstly.The preprocessing in here included noise reduction, binarization, normalization and thinning. Then, the global features, local features which each of them include several features were extracted respectively after the preprocessing, and they are combined together. Finally, experiments were performed using K nearest neighbor (K-NN) classifier for Uyghur signature samples from 75 different people with 1500 signatures. It was obtained 96.8% of highest identification rate with the combination of directional features and local central point features. The experimental results indicated that this method can capture the character of Uyghur signature and its writing style effectively. © Sila Science. All Rights Reserved.

A texture features based writer identification method is proposed for Uyghur, Kazakh and Kyrgyz (UKK) handwriting in this paper. Original UKK handwriting images are collected and texture images are obtained after pre-processing. The multi-channel Gabor filters which is suitable for the nature of UKK handwritings are designed, and 144 dimensional texture features were extracted for wide range of frequency and orientation because of the nature of the UKK handwriting. Four types of classifiers such as Euclidean Distance Classifier (ED), Weighted Euclidean Distance Classifier (WED), K-Nearest Neighbor (K-NN) Classifier, and Support Vector Machine (SVM) are used. Three kinds of experiments are conducted, in which the method that selecting more appropriate 64 features from 144 dimensional Gabor features using Genetic Algorithm (GA) techniques is indicated higher identification rates. Experiments were performed using UKK handwritings from 78 Uyghur, 61 Kazakh and 48 Kyrgyz participants, and achieved very promising results that 85.2% of accuracy for Uyghur handwriting, 86.0%of accuracy for Kazakh handwriting and 90.2% accuracy for Kyrgyz handwritings respectively with SVM classifier. © Sila Science. It plays essential role in estimating and comparing research results achieved by different groups of researcher to create standard databases. Many handwritten databases reported are mostly based on Latin, Chinese, Arabic, and other languages, but none of them related with Uyghur handwriting. In this paper, a Uyghur handwritten text database written by multiple writers is introduced. It can be used for research in the recognition of Uyghur handwriting (word or text), word segmentation, document image processing (analysis or retrieval), and writer identification. This database contains 2016 handwritten document images written by 813 native writers of Uyghur. Each handwriting document is scanned, stored with. bmp file, and the noise in the handwriting image is removed. So far, this is the first Uyghur offline handwriting database that is available freely for worldwide researchers. © 2013 IEEE.

There are a variety of different scripts in the world. Almost every country have there own languages and scripts which can distinguish from each other in different aspects. It is very essential to identify different scripts in multi-lingual, multi-script document. In recent years, different kinds of approaches have been developed for script identification and gotten promising results. In this paper, an overview of the script identification is proposed under different categories: script systems, extracted features and classification methods. Earlier researches and future property of this field is discussed. Traditional template matching recognition method can be easily confused with the recognition of the UighurNew writing case-same shape, Overcome the traditional template matching's shortcomings and improves the recognition rate which needs to do some further research on the basis of template matching to the identification of the case-same shape. Method is mainly based on the judgment that capital letters outlines are relatively big and small letters outlines are relatively small for the same form letters and then differentiate them, namely according to ratio of letter's outline size and the full text average of letters outlines size to judge the case of the letters. Results show that, this method significantly improves the recognition rate of the characters. © 2013 Asian Network for Scientific Information.

Recognition and verification systems plays very critical role in the area of information security as they are very essential to user certification. In resent years, off-line signature recognition and verification receiving renewed interest and only one of several techniques used to verify the identities of individuals, also that one of the biometric techniques. Signatures offer a secure means for confirmation and authorization in legal documents. Thus, nowadays the signature identification and verification becomes an indispensable part for including embedded signatures of automating the rapid processing of documents. Researchers have been proposed various approaches for handwritten signature recognition and verification in the past years. This paper presents a survey for non-western handwritten signature based offline signature verification and identification. In this area, the accuracy rates obtained so far from the available systems is not sufficiently high, and more researches on off-line signature verification as well as off-line signature identification are required. © (2014) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.
