Several UHVDC transmission schemes employing ±800 kV DC transmission are presently under construction or in planning in China. The challenges for insulation design resulting from this high transmission voltage and its associated steady state and transient overvoltages have already been investigated and solved during the design work for the Yunnan-Guangdong ±800 kV/5000 MW transmission project. However, the even higher rated transmission capacity of 6400 MW defined for the Xiangjiaba-Shanghai ±800 kV transmission scheme additionally required more powerful thyristors with increased current rating of 4000 A. Consequently, a new generation of high-power thyristors were developed based on silicon wafers with a diameter of 6 inches. In parallel the complementary technology of the thyristor valves was adapted to the higher current rating. This paper provides an overview of the design of the thyristor valves for the Fulong converter station of the Xiangjiaba-Shanghai transmission project including insulation design, current rating and the features of the new 6 inch thyristor. The basic principle and structure of the 24-pulse rectifier are studied in this paper. Two methods for realizing the 24-pulse rectifier model in PSCAC/EMTDC are proposed, include three single phase auto-transformer method and three-winding transformer method. A test system is used to verify the validity of the model, and the simulation results show that the rectified waveform and the harmonic components are in consistent with the theoretical results. The main purpose of HVDC back to back project is to unite two large AC power grid of different voltage grade or different frequency. Thyristor valve is the important equipment in the converter station. The purpose of thyristor valve is to use rectifier valve make AC power into DC power, and use inverter valve make DC power into AC power. In allusion to main parameter requirement of Gaoling ±125 kV HVDC back to back thyristor valve electrical design, according to thyristor valve design technical specification, use simulate and analysis calculation, optimize the main parameter of the thyristor, and carry out calculation the number of thyristor positions and damping circuit parameters (including damping capacitance, damping resistance and DC resistance), and coordination of protective firing level.
