Tubular Goods Research Institute of China National Petroleum Corporation has experience in both test and research of high grade materials in strain-based design of pipelines. The evaluation of line pipe materials for strain-based design including the conventional performance, longitudinal tensile properties of pipe body which related to strain capacity, resistance to strain aging are mentioned. Full scale test and numerical calculating of pipe deformation are also involved besides these. A systematic program to evaluate pipes for strain-based design (SBD) is present in the paper. In order to reduce the tee-joint's thickness and manufacturing cost, a series of large diameter and high-strength tee-joints are manufactured based on the equivalent strength design principles. The burst pressure of tee-joints is obtained directly by a series of burst tests. In addition, numerical simulations are carried out to evaluate the burst pressure capacity of a tee-joint. The influence of the fillet radius and the thickness of the branch are also discussed. The results of this paper may provide guidance in the design and manufacture of a tee joint. © 2014 American Society of Civil Engineers. Source

The premium connection's seal structure of the casing is the key factor affecting the performance of sealing. The changes of contact length, contact pressure and penetration length along the primary sealing surface of two different main seal structure forms (the cone/cone and arc/cone) were analyzed by finite element method at make-up, tension, bending, internal pressure and tensile loading. The changing laws of different types of sealing surface with load capacity were given. The new seal principles were put forward. When the effective contact length of sealing contact surface exceeded 0.5 mm, the value of contact pressure minimum subtracted from maximum was 5.8 times internal pressure, and in range of effective contact pressure and length, contact surface plastic strain was controlled in the yield point's scope of strain, anti-galling and eliminating seal clearance were made. The test results agree well with the numerical simulation. The results show that the established model was proper and the used method was reasonable. The influence of the tensile load on the seal was significantly higher than bending load. Source

Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and potentiodynamic polarisation measurements were used to verify the effects of temperature and acetic acid (HAc) on the anodic and cathodic reactions in CO2 corrosion of 316L stainless steel in 3·5% NaCl solution. The tests were carried at 30, 60 and 90°C. The initiation concentration of HAc was varied between 0 and 3000 ppm. After the potentiodynamic polarisation measurements, the surface morphologies for every condition were detected by using scanning electron microscopy. In the present work, the fitting parameters of polarisation curves, such as the corrosion potential Ecorr, the corrosion current density Icorr and Tafel shopes (ba and bc), were mainly discussed. In addition, the equivalent circuit was used to fit each Nyquist plot in order to obtain the important parameters. In the last section, the probable pitting corrosion mechanisms of pit initiation and growth were also analysed and validated. The results indicated that temperature and the addition of HAc have an important synergistic effect on the pitting corrosion behaviour and mechanism, leading to the increased corrosion rate with temperature and HAc. © 2011 Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining.
