In asynchronous duty-cycled wireless sensor networks, it is desirable that the data forwarding scheme is adaptive to the dynamics caused by the uncertainty of sensor nodes' working schedules. Contention-based forwarding is designed to adapt to the dynamic environments. In this work, we are interested in the contention-based geographic forwarding (CGF) for two asynchronous duty-cycling (ADC) models, which we refer to as uninterruptible ADC (U-ADC) and interruptible ADC (I-ADC). We propose a new residual time-aware routing metric for CGF in the I-ADC model and present a residual time-aware forwarding scheme using this metric. We evaluate the performance of CGF in both asynchronous duty-cycling models. Simulation results show that CGF in the U-ADC model provides a shorter delivery delay while suffering from a high sender effective duty cycle problem. CGF in the I-ADC model incurs a very long data delivery delay, but it can achieve a good load balancing among nodes. It is also demonstrated that the proposed residual time-aware forwarding scheme lowers the effects of the performance degradation caused by the pure asynchronous duty-cycling operation. Generally, if a user wants to use numerous different network services, he/she must register himself/herself to every service providing server. It is extremely hard for users to remember these different identities and passwords. In order to resolve this problem, various multi-server authentication protocols have been proposed. Recently, Sood et al. analyzed Hsiang and Shihs multi-server authentication protocol and proposed an improved dynamic identity based authentication protocol for multi-server architecture. They claimed that their protocol provides users anonymity, mutual authentication, the session key agreement and can resist several kinds of attacks. However, through careful analysis, we find that Sood et al.s protocol is still vulnerable to leak-of-verifier attack, stolen smart card attack and impersonation attack. Besides, since there is no way for the control server CS to know the real identity of the user, the authentication and session key agreement phase of Sood et al.s protocol is incorrect. We propose an efficient and security dynamic identity based authentication protocol for multi-server architecture that removes the aforementioned weaknesses. The proposed protocol is extremely suitable for use in distributed multi-server architecture since it provides users anonymity, mutual authentication, efficient, and security. © 2011 Elsevier Ltd. To design a routing protocol that saves sensor node energy while meeting the needs of different applications has become a research focus in wireless sensor network. In this paper, we propose Energy-Efficient and Delay-Constrained Routing (EEDCR) protocol, in which delay-sensitive packets are transmitted along the shortest path to minimize their end-to-end delay, while others are sent to the next hop which is selected based on local neighbor information, e.g., the remaining energy, the proportion covered by the length of data in the total length of the queue and the depth, which alleviates congestion at hot spots. The simulation results show that EEDCR reduces the average end-to-end delay, balances the energy consumption, and prolongs network lifetime.

In the multi-sensor measurement system, background subtraction is very important to improve both the accuracy and the sensitivity of the system. As the prerequisite, the performance of background noise estimation is considered as the foundation and also a hot topic. In this paper, a novel adaptive background noise estimation method based on spatial-temporal correlation is proposed. Firstly, a feature zero-crossing rate extracted from the raw data is chosen to describe the background noise degree, and then the model of background noise estimation based on the correlation of the space and the time in multi-sensor measurement system is proposed. Applying the model, using zero-crossing rate as the input, we can get the real-time weight of each sensor, which is used for estimating the adaptive background noise. Finally, seismic background noise estimation experiments are operated. The comparison between several other methods in the sensor failure situation shows that, the proposed method is more effective and more stable.

Target localization is one of the most challenging and important issues in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). A multiple target localization method is proposed in WSNs. The multiple target localization issue is transformed into compressed sensing issue by designing iteration backtracking algorithm using multi-resolution analysis idea. The achievement of this algorithm is to save the energy of WSN nodes, by minimizing inter-node communication, in the result of which the lifetime of the WSN is prolonged, at the cost of increasing the computation complexity in the fusion center instead. Emulation results demonstrated that the localization performance is improved by more than 50% by the proposed algorithm.

Parking space detection is a key technology in the parking lot management system. When performing parking space detection using magnetic sensors, there may be interference from the adjacent parking space, which will result in false detection. However there still will be false detection when only cameras are used to detect the parking spaces because the performance of the cameras is inclined to be affected by the environment. Considering that the magnetic sensors are only sensitive to ferromagnetic objects and insensitive to the environment effect and images often contain a wealth of information, we propose a parking space detection algorithm combining the information from magnetic sensors and images. The algorithm performs primitive detection using magnetic sensors. If the sensor reports that there is a vehicle nearby, the algorithm analyzes the image information of the parking space gathered by the camera, extracts the image features of the parking space and classifies the features to confirm whether the parking space is occupied. The experimental results show that our algorithm can make more precise decisions for parking space detection with much lower complexity and less computational efforts. Furthermore our algorithm can effectively reduce the burden of image or video processing of the system.

In the scenario of up links from users to cooperating nodes are not reliable, we construct a wireless channel model and introduce channel coding and network coding into cooperative communication system and propose a cooperating scheme based on joint channel-network coding. As metric of system performance, according to Shannon theorem, the system outage probability is analyzed and an expression is provided. Based system outage probability, we study the impact of energy and rate allocation, and provide an appropriate allocation coefficients. Analysis and simulation show that, even though the up links from users to cooperating node are not reliable, our cooperating scheme also can achieve spatial diversity, and improve system performance.

In view of the slowness, the locality of convergence and the low accuracy of Simple Genetic Algorithm (SGA) in solving complex continuous space optimization problems, we introduce an improved genetic algorithm called Quantum Genetic Algorithm based Search Space Partition (SSPQGA). In this algorithm, the search space partition method is used to increase search accuracy and inhibit premature problem. The chromosomes are composed of quantum bits whose probability amplitudes comprise gene chains. The quantum chromosomes are evolved by quantum rotation gates, and mutated by quantum non-gates. Several typical examples are carried out and the results indicate that the novel algorithm possesses advantages such as less chance of being trapped into premature states, higher accuracy and higher stability. As a result, SSPQGA can be widely applied to many complex continuous space optimization problems which require higher accuracy.
