Based on elastic mechanics and by use of thick cylinder theory, this paper presents a finite element analysis model with interference fit and axial load on P-110S conic threaded connections and the tooth load distributions on contact threaded surfaces were investigated. A 2D finite element model with elastic-plastic axisymmetric contact threaded surfaces was established and the tooth load distributions on its thread teeth were analyzed under different interference fit and axial load. Results for the loads on every engaged tooth are obtained. These indicate that the load distribution on the engaged teeth is not uniform, with the maximum tooth load concentrated on the first three pairs or the farthest two pairs of engaged teeth from the pin end and the middle teeth only bear a very small load. Such results are identical to the practical situation and indicate that the finite element model proposed in this paper is reasonable. © 2011 Elsevier Ltd.

Based on the modification principle and adjustment of materials order degree, four kinds of Fe 3Si based ordered alloys alloyed with Cr and Al were prepared by vacuum arc melting and annealing. Meanwhile, the alloys were characterized by XRD, SEM, EPMA, and the degree of ordering of the ordered phase was evaluated by the long range order (LRO) parameter. The result shows that four kinds of ordered intermetallics have different microstructure. With the decrease of Si content, the degree of order decreases. The effect of Al and Cr alloying plays a promoting roles in the decreasing tendency of degree of order. At the same content of Si, the order degree of Fe 65Si 25Cr 5Al 5 is lower than that of Fe 3Si. The order degrees of Fe 65Si 25Cr 5Al 5 and Fe 3Si are 0.658 and 0.796 respectively.

Metal contact seals are widely used in mechanical equipment, and such sealing performance is directly influenced by the interfacial micro-contact state. In this paper, the surfaces with random roughness are simulated by an exponential autocorrelation function and root-mean-square roughness. The model of metal surface micro-contact is established. The influences of the external loads on the interfacial separation, contact area and maximum interfacial stress are investigated by means of Hertz contact theory. Calculations and investigations are carried out for a concrete sealing interface. The variations of the interfacial separation, contact area and interfacial stress with the external applied loads are investigated with the two surfaces of the same and different root-mean-square roughness, respectively. Meanwhile, the concrete variation curves are obtained. Furthermore, the obtained variation curves are analysed in detail. © IMechE 2013.

Based on elastic mechanics and by means of thick-walled-cylinder theory, this paper established a calculating model with interference fit on conic thread connections and the radial stress and deformation on contact tooth surface were obtained. As a calculation example of P-110S and using the large finite element analysis software ABAQUS, a finite element model with elastic-plastic axisymmetric contact problem was built up and the stress distribution and deformation on thread teeth were analyzed under different kinds of conditions, such as interference and interference fit with tensile load process.

Tightening torque is one of the main factors that affect the connection quality in threaded connections. On the basis of elastic mechanics and by use of the thick-walled-cylindrical theory, an analytical model was established according with the geometric parameters of thread tooth, and then the calculation method of tightening torque on threaded connections was obtained by calculating the frictional torque on each threaded surface. Moreover, the friction coefficient on the contact threaded surface was also measured by experimental test. Taking P-110S threaded connection as a calculating example and comparing the tightening torque obtained by analytical model with the make-up torque in application, the analytical model and calculation method proposed in this paper are reasonable and it offers an accurate method to calculate the make-up torque in threaded connections.

Local tooth shape error was created in the fabrication on threaded connections. It was one of the main factors that can affect the load distribution, deformation and therefore affect the connection quality. On the basis of elastic mechanics, an analytical model was established according with the geometric parameters of thread tooth. And the load distribution on threaded connections considering local tooth shape error was developed by making a mechanics analysis on each thread tooth. Taking P-110S cylindrical pipe threaded connection as a calculating example and considering the effect of different local tooth shape errors, the effects of tooth shape errors on load distribution at threaded connections are analyzed and some regular conclusions are obtained.

In the present work, intermetallics Fe3Si and Fe3 (Si1-xAlx) (x=0.33, 0.67, 0.80) produced by arc melting, were evaluated regarding the oxidation at 900°C in air. The test preformed was the isothermal and cyclic oxidation. The microstructures of oxide films were analyzed by XRD, SEM, EDS, EPMA. The result showed that the four kinds of intermetallics had good oxidation resistance at 900°C. The addition of Al element can increase the oxidation resistance of Fe3Si based intermetallics. The oxidation kinetics of the four intermetallics follows the rule of the parabola. The main oxidation product of Fe3Si is SiO 2. The kinetics of oxidation reaction is mainly controlled by Si diffusion. The oxidation product of three Al alloying Fe3Si based intermetallics is Al oxide. Al moves outward from the substrate to form a protective oxide film which restrained the diffusion of Si and Fe outward.

The application of API threaded connections for casing and tubing is limited due to their imperfect sealing ability and weak connecting strength. To overcome these prominent drawbacks of API threaded connections, new WSP series of premium threaded connections are developed by Wuxi Seamless Oil Pipe Corporation for HTHP(High temperature, High pressure) wells, deep wells, steam injection wells, highly deviated and long horizontal wells, etc. Characteristics and application ranges of eight kinds of these high performance premium threaded connections are compared and analyzed thoroughly in this paper. The comparison results are not only a good reference for technicians to design new connections, but a technical proof for users to choose the proper connections in different applications. © (2013) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

Tightening torque is one of the main factors that could affect the connection quality in threaded connections. On the basis of elastic mechanics and thick cylinder theory, this paper established a new analytical model based on the geometric parameters of thread tooth and the calculation method of tightening torque on P-110S threaded connections was also obtained by calculating the frictional torque on each threaded surface. In this paper, the friction coefficient on the real contact thread tooth was measured by the developed experimental equipment that could be used to simulate the contact of threaded surfaces approximately. By applying the new method on P-110S threaded connection and comparing the results obtained by analytical model with the true make-up torque in application, it could be found that the analytical model and the calculation method proposed in this paper are reasonable. The new method was also validated by using the finite element analysis method to the same sample. The new method proposed in this paper is practical and convenient because it can be applied to calculate the tightening torque just with geometric parameters and thread numbers, which is easier to implement in application. © 2011 American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

This paper presents a new analytical method that can calculate the load distribution on the thread teeth in cylindrical pipe threaded connection. The new method was developed by analyzing each male and female thread tooth from the connection on the basis of elastic mechanics. By using this method, the load distribution on each thread tooth can be calculated with the tightening torque and thread numbers. By applying the new method on the sample of API 88.9 mm round threaded connection, the obtained results show that the load on thread tooth mainly concentrates on the last four or five threads engaged. By using the finite element analysis method to the same sample validates the new method. The new method proposed in this paper is practical and convenient because it can be applied to calculate the load and deformation on each thread tooth just with tightening torque and thread numbers, which is easier to implement in practice.
