Objective: To analyze the MRI and clinical manifestations of pituitary stalk interruption syndrome (PSIS). Methods: The clinical and MRI data of 16patients with PSIS were retrospectively analyzed. Results: Sixteen cases were found with single or multiple pituitary hormone deficiencies by laboratory tests. MRI showed decrescent pituitary in all cases, absent pituitary stalk in 15cases, pituitary stalk interrupt in 1case, ectopic posterior lobe in 15cases, and absent high signal of posterior lobe in 1case. Conclusion: PSIS was characterized by partial or complete anterior pituitary function loss, and its MRI features were pituitary volume shrinking, pituitary stalk interruption or absent, and posterior lobe ectopic views.

Objective: To investigate the expression of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) in cervical carcinoma and its clinical significance. Methods: Tissue microarray technique and immunohistochemistry SP method were used to detect the expression of COX-2 and bFGF in 143 tissue samples of invasive carcinoma of the cervix (ICC) and 20 tissue samples of paraneoplastic normal cervical epithelium (NCE). The relationship of COX-2 and bFGF expression in ICC with the clinicopathologic factors including histopathological grading, nodal metastasis, stroma involvement, FIGO staging and histological type was analyzed. Results: The positive expression of COX-2 was significantly higher in ICC than in NCE [87.4% (125/143) vs. 40.0% (8/20), P = 0.00]. The positive expression of bFGF was significantly higher in ICC than in NCE [88.8% (127/143) vs. 25.0% (5/20), P = 0.00]. The expression of COX-2 was positively correlated with the FIGO staging, histopathological grading and stromal invasion (r = 0.222, P = 0.008; r = 0.354, P = 0.00, and r = 0.243, P = 0.003, respectively). The expression of bFGF was positively correlated with lymph node metastasis and histopathologic grading (r = 0.239, P = 0.004 and r = 0.369, P = 0.00, respectively). The expression of bF-GF was positively correlated with the expression of COX-2 in ICC (r = 0.234, P = 0.005). The ratio of the consistency between the expression of the two proteins was up to 79.7% (114/143). With the increase of the malignant degree of cervical carcinoma, the expression of COX-2 and bFGF showed a rising tendency. Conclusion: The over-expression of COX-2 and bFGF is closely correlated with the invasion, progression and differentiation of cervical carcinoma. Joint detection of COX-2 and bFGF expression can help further understand the biological behavior of cervical carcinoma and predict its prognosis.

Objective: To discuss the clinical efficacy of the oral methotrexate for treating persistent ectopic pregnancy. Methods: Fifty patients with persistent ectopic pregnancy were randomly divided into two groups, with 25 cases in each group. Group A for the treatment group were given oral methotrexate tablet (60 mg/m2), for every 2 hours, 12 times for a period of treatment, for one or two period(s); As the control group, group B received a single injection of 50 mg of methotrexate. There was no significant difference in age, beta HCG value, etc between the two groups. Results: No surgery was perfomed in group A, and all cases were cured; Five cases of tubal rupture occured in Group B and one side salpingectomy was performed; There was significant difference in declined rate of Beta HCG value between the two groups (P<0.05) on the 1st, 3rd, 7th, 14th days after treatment, which were 65%, 85%, 90%, 85% in group A versus 45%, 75%, 80% and 85% in group B respectively; No serious side effect occurred in both groups. Conclusion: The low-dose and intermittent oral methotrexate tablets are effective, simple and feasible in treatment of persistent ectopic pregnancy. ©, 2015, Editorial Board of Medical Journal of Wuhan University. AIM: To evaluate the clinical effects and security of endoscopic variceal ligation (EVL) combined with tissue glue injection in the treatment of esophageal variceal bleeding. METHODS: A total of 229 patients with gastric variceal bleeding (EGVB) treated at Wuhan No. 3 Hospital from January 2007 to March 2013 were selected. The patients were divided into three groups: a sclerotherapy plus tissue glue group (n = 65), a conservative treatment group (n = 76) and an EVL plus tissue glue group (n = 88). The clinical effects of the three groups were observed. According to the use of painless endoscopy or not, the EVL plus tissue glue group was divided into two groups: a painless group (n = 46) and a normal group (n = 42). Blood pressure (BP), heart rate (HR), and hemoglobin oxygen saturation levels (SpO2) were compared. RESULTS: In the EVL plus tissue glue group, there were 6 (6.8%) cases of early hemorrhage (6.8%), 8 (9.0%) cases of late hemorrhage, 2 (2.3%) cases of complications, and 3 (3.4%) of death. Except the incidence of complications (the conservative treatment group had no complications), the above parameters were significantly less in the EVL plus tissue glue group than in the other two groups (P < 0.05). With regards to endoscopic curative effect, in the EVL plus tissue glue group, marked improvement was achieved in 57 (64.8%) cases, improvement in 21 (23.8%) and no improvement in 10 (11.3%), with a total effective rate of 88.6%. Compared with the other two groups, the endoscopic curative effect and total effective rate were significantly better in the EVL plus tissue glue group (P <0.05). Between the painless and normal groups, there were no significant differences in heart rate or blood oxygen saturation before and after operation. Postoperative blood pressure was lower in the painless group than in the normal group. CONCLUSION: The curative effect of EVL combined with tissue adhesives is better, the complication and mortality are very low, and the total effective rate is higher. © 2016 Baishideng Publishing Group Inc. Objective: This study examined the mechanism of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) up-regulating the expression of 14-3-3 protein, blocking the myocardial apoptosis in diabetic cardiomyopathy and thereby improving cardiac function. Methods and Results: (1) Rat model of diabetic cardiomyopathy was made by feeding rats with high fat/high sugar diet and intraperitoneal injection of small dose of streptozocin (STZ). The model was successfully established as confirmed by the detection of blood sugar, lipid profile, ultrasonographic and hemodynamic examinations. (2) Bone marrow (BM) liquid was taken from the rat femur and tibia bones. The BMSCs were obtained by culture and were confirmed by phase-contrast microscopy and flow cytometry. The BMSCs were transplanted into the rats and fluorescent microscopy showed that transplantation was successful. (3) TUNNEL, Western blotting revealed that in rats of DCM group, myocardial apoptosis was more severe and expression of capase-3 was significantly up-regulated while in rats receiving transplantation of BMSCs showed opposite changes, with the differences being statistically significant (P < 0.05). (4) Western blotting exhibited that, compared with DCM group, 14-3-3 and p-Ask1 protein was significantly increased while Ask1 was obviously decreased. Conclusion: Our findings suggested that transplantation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells could inhibit the myocardial apoptosis in diabetic cardiomyopathy, possibly by up-regulating the expression of 14-3-3 protein and inhibiting the phosphorylation of Ask1.
