Massive data collection by businesses and governments calls into question traditional methods for protecting privacy, underpinned by two core principles: (i) notice, that there should be no data collection system whose existence is secret, and (ii) consent, that data collected for one purpose not be used for another without user permission. But notice, designated as a fundamental privacy principle in a different era, makes little sense in situations where collection consists of lots and lots of small amounts of information, whereas consent is no longer realistic, given the complexity and number of decisions that must be made. Thus, efforts to protect privacy by controlling use of data are gaining more attention. I discuss relevant technology, policy, and law, as well as some examples that can illuminate the way. Source

A personal protection device carried or worn by a user has a simple actuator button and transmitter operable within a mesh network covering a monitored environment such as a college campus or industrial park transmits an exigent assistance call to a first responder such as security or DPS (Department of Public Safety) personnel for urgent response. The system for deploying and monitoring the personal protection devices distributes or otherwise transfers possession of an actuator device to a user, such that the actuator device is adapted for wearing or disposing on the user in anticipation of a sudden exigent situation. A distribution repository associates the actuator device with the user, in which the association is temporary for subsequent association with a second user to provide efficient reuse as devices are exchanged or no longer needed.

The techniques herein describe an approach that can quickly geolocate Internet users that are connected through a wireless (e.g., WiFi) network. To do so, one or more embodiments herein send specially-crafted signals to the users IP address. When these signals are broadcast by the users wireless router to the users wireless device, they have a discernible signature. Other geolocation efforts may then be used to scope the Internet users location (e.g., to the appropriate city or section of a city). A user or automated device may then physically traverse (e.g., drive through) the search area listening on wireless channels for the discernible wireless signature. Once it is located, directional antennas and triangulation may be used to exactly locate the user.

Compositions that include fibrin microthreads are provided. The compositions can include one or more therapeutic agents including cytokines and interleukins, extracellular matrix proteins and/or biologically active fragments thereof (e.g., RGD-containing peptides), hormones, vitamins, nucleic acids, chemotherapeutics, antibiotics, and cells. Also provided are methods of making compositions that include fibrin microthreads. Also provided are methods for using the compositions to repair or ameliorate damaged or defective organs or tissues.

An epidermal electrode operable independently of the ambient environment, such as the presence of water, sweat, or dry conditions, and achieve a suitable impedance with the epidermal surface for transmitting electrical signals indicative of bodily physiological process such as ECG signals for heart monitoring. The hydrophobic surface mountable electrode including a flexible, conductive substrate of PDMS (Polydimethylsiloxane) with dispersed carbon black and having a substantially planar sensing area adapted for communication with an electrically sensitive surface such as a patients skin, and an embedded conductor encapsulated in the substrate for connection to a monitor circuit, the terminal having electrical continuity with the planar sensing area.
