Electrochemical performance was studied for 904L stainless steel after solution treatment at different temperatures in concentrated sulfuric acid by means of measurements potentiodynamic polarization curve and cycle polarization curve. The results show that the solution temperature has little effect on cathodic process, but varies the anodic polarization curve greatly. Whilst 904L stainless steel shows the best corrosion resistance after solution treatment at 1120 °C for 0.5 h.

Potentiodynamic polarization curves, cyclic polarization curves and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were used to investigate the corrosion behaviors of 904L stainless steel in concentrated sulfuric acid containing hydrofluoric acid. The result shows that the corrosion of 904L stainless steel in concentrated sulfuric acid is inhibited when the mass fraction of hydrofluoric acid is less than 2%; while the corrosion is promoted when the mass fraction of hydrofluoric acid is higher than 2%. With the increase of hydrofluoric acid concentration, the corrosion controlling step changes from electrochemical reaction to mixed mass transportationelectrochemical reaction. EIS and the plots present the change of time contant from one to two, i.e. capacitance loop in high frequency and inductance loop in low frequency.

Effects of aging process on microstructure and corrosion resistance of 904L super austenitic stainless steel in H2SO4 and HF mixed solution were studied by means of optical microscope, SEM, EDS analysis and electrochemical tests. The results show that microstructure of 904L stainless steel consists of austenite with a number of twins after solid solution and aging treatment. With the increase of the aging time, the corrosion current density increases and the impedance value decreases, at constant aging temperature, which means that corrosion resistance of 904L stainless steel decreases. When 904L austenite stainless steel aged at 760℃ for 1 h, the minimum corrosion current density is obtained and charge transfer resistance reaches the maximum value, i.e. the corrosion resistance of 904L austenite stainless steel in H2SO4 and HF mixed solution is optimal with the aging process. ©, 2015, Editorial Office of Transactions of Materials and Heat Treatment.
