In exploitating coal seam No.33 under the condition of quaternary loose layer in Cuizhuang coal mine, in order to improve the mining upper limit of the working faces of both upper-01 and lower-01 seams, we studied the height of water flowing fractured zone of the overburden strata. The result shows that the height is 59.65 m when the upper-3 coal seam is exploited alone and is 66.0 m when the upper-3 and lower-2 coal seams have been completely exploited. These two values become 47.1 m and 50.8 m according to the empirical formula and 53.21 m and 62.3 m according to numerical simulation. The comparison between the measure data with the data by empirical formula and numerical simulation indicates that the height almost keeps unchanged either by exploiting the upper-3 coal seam alone or by completely exploiting both the upper-3 and the lower-3 coal seams, with the height difference being not more than 10 m. So this measured result is reliable.
