To investigate the expression of Beclin1 in the colonic mucosa tissue of patients with ulcerative colitis (UC), which acts as a regulator of autophagy and might play a part in the disease progression potentially. A total of 112 patients were selected from September 2013 to November 2014, and their colonic mucosal tissues were collected as the subject of study. Among them, 75 cases were diagnosed with ulcerative colitis (UC), 37 cases were diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome (IRS) during the same time, which was set as the control group. The mucosal tissues were processed with ELISA and IHCA to measure the expression level of Beclin1, and correlation analysis was performed to demonstrate its role in the disease progression. The expression level pf Beclin1 was significantly higher in the UC patients compared with the control group (P<0.05). Meanwhile, it’s positively correlated with the severity of disease, the endoscopic classification and the pathologic staging results, which has statistical significance (P<0.05). Beclin1 was expressed at a higher level in UC patients, and correlated with the severity of the disease, indicating the abnormal regulation of autophagy in the disease progression. © 2015 E-Century Publishing Corporation. Objective: To analyze the differences in indicators of static postural balance in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients with different vitamin D levels and to investigate the association between vitamin D levels and fall risks in T2DM patients. Methods: A total of 125 T2DM patients were selected between Dec. 2014 and Oct. 2015. The patients were divided into the following groups according to their 25(OH)D3 levels: the severe deficiency group (group A), deficiency group (group B), insufficiency group (group C), and normal group (group D). Platform plantar pressure was measured to compare the differences in the total traveled way (TTW) of the center of pressure (COP) and the ellipse area (EA) enclosing the TTW of the COP among the 4 groups. Variables that affected the TTW of the COP and the EA enclosing the TTW of the COP were used for the Pearson correlation analysis. All factors with P<0.05 were included in the stepwise multiple linear regression analysis. Results: The TTW of the COP and the EA enclosing the 95% TTW of the COP in the vitamin D severe deficiency and deficiency groups were significantly higher than those in the insufficiency and normal groups. The stepwise multiple linear regression analysis showed that the 25(OH)D3 level had an independent negative correlation with the TTW of the COP and the EA enclosing the 95% TTW of the COP. Conclusions: The vitamin D level had an independent negative correlation with the static postural balance. The chromosome 1p/19q deletion has been reported as a good prognosis marker for gliomas. However, the detection of 1p/19q status alone in glioma patients is not sufficient. The identification of a combination of molecular factors could effectively enhance the prediction accuracy. Thus far, the potential correlation between the 1p/19q status and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) expression has not been elucidated. The level of VEGF mRNA expression in the tumor and the adjacent normal tissues was determined by real-time polymerase chain reaction. The 1p/19q status of glioma patients was determined by fluorescence in situ hybridization. The association between the 1p/19q status and VEGF mRNA expression, as well as the glioma grade, was evaluated. A higher VEGF mRNA expression level was observed in gliomas, compared to matched normal tissues (P < 0.01). The 1p/19q status was significantly correlated with glioma grade (P = 0.018) and VEGF mRNA expression in the tissues (P = 0.005). A higher percentage of patients with high-grade gliomas displayed an intact 1p/19q and higher VEGF mRNA expression than those with low-grade gliomas. A survival analysis revealed that patients (with high- and low-grade gliomas) with intact 1p/19q and higher VEGF mRNA expression showed a shorter overall survival time. Moreover, tissue VEGF mRNA expression and WHO grade were found to be independent risk factors for gliomas. In conclusion, the 1p/19q status and VEGF mRNA expression in tissues could be used in combination to predict the prognosis of gliomas. © FUNPEC-RP.

Objective: The aim was to evaluate the feasibility and safety of early chest tube removal after complete video-assisted thoracic lobectomy (CVATL). Methods: Retrospective analysis was performed on effects of chest tube removal on patients with lung cancer after pulmonary lobectomy between November 2013 and October 2014. 154 eligible patients included 97 cases for CVATL and 57 cases for open thoracic lobectomy. Patients with CVATL were divided randomly into experimental group (EG) and control group (CG), in which 51 patients in EG had chest tube removal on the 2 nd day after operation; 46 patients in CG had the tube removal when the drainage volume <100 ml/day. Patients in open thoracic lobectomy group (OG) had the tubes removal as CG. The drainage volumes of the 1 st and 2 nd 24 h after operation, duration of chest tubes, cases of pain alleviation, and recurrent pleural effusions requiring reintervention were measured. Results: The average drainage volume of the 1 st 24 h after operation of CVATL group from EG and CG was significantly reduced than that in OG (260.41 ml vs. 353.16 ml, P < 0.001). The average drainage volume of the 2 nd 24 h after operation of CG was significantly reduced than that in OG (163.91 ml vs. 222.98 ml, P < 0.001). The average duration of chest tube of CG for 2.98 days showed significant different compared with OG for 3.81 days (P < 0.001). Chest tube removal in CVATL group increased more chest pain alleviation than OG (80.4% vs. 56.1%, P = 0.001). The frequencies of recurrent pleural effusions requiring reintervention were 5.88% (3/51), 4.35% (2/46) and 5.26% (3/57), respectively, which had no significant differences between three groups (P = 1.000). Conclusions: Complete video-assisted thoracic lobectomy brings less drainage volume after operation. Early removal of chest tube in CVATL shows feasible and safe and demonstrates that it may reduce postoperative pain and help fast recovery.

The level of total adiponectin, a mixture of different adiponectin forms, has been reported associated with breast cancer risk with inconsistent results. Whether the different forms play different roles in breast cancer risk prediction is unclear. To examine this, we measured total and high molecular weight (HMW) adiponectin in a case-control study (1167 sets). Higher circulating HMW adiponectin was negatively associated with breast cancer risk after adjusting for menopausal status and family history of breast cancer (P=0.024). We analyzed the relationship between adiponectin and breast cancer risk in 6 subgroups. Higher circulating HMW adiponectin was also negatively associated with breast cancer risk (P=0.020, 0.014, 0.035) in the subgroups of postmenopausal women, negative family history of breast cancer, BMI>=24.0. Total adiponectin was positively associated with breast cancer (P=0.028) in the subgroup of BMI<=24.0. Higher HMW/total adiponectin ratio was negatively associated with breast cancer (P=0.019) in the subgroup of postmenopausal women. Interestingly, in the subgroup of women with family history of breast cancer, higher circulating total and HMW adiponectin were positively associated with breast cancer risk (P=0.034, 0.0116). This study showed different forms of circulating adiponectin levels might play different roles in breast cancer risk. A higher circulating HMW adiponectin is associated with a decreased breast cancer risk, especially in postmenopausal, without family history of breast cancer or BMI>=24.0 subgroups, whereas higher circulating HMW adiponectin levels is a risk factor in women with a family history of breast cancer. Further investigation of different forms of adiponectin on breast cancer risk is needed. © 2015 Guo et al.
