Sanitary landfilling is the most common way to eliminate solid urban waste. An important problem associated to landfills is the production of leachate. Because of its characteristics and because of its occurrence at remote locations, leachate needs to be treated separately from municipal or other wastewater. In the past years, several large-scale installations for leachate treatment had been installed and commissioned in the Maghreb countries. In this paper the particular concerns and requirements from the leachate treatment in Maghreb as well as the lessons that had been learned from some of the realised projects are presented.
