An RCD (rotating control device) is used to provide a system and method for sealing a marine riser having a rotatable tubular. A bypass internal channel or external line may be used to allow fluid to bypass the RCD seal. An RCD seal assembly seal could be a mechanically extrudable seal or a hydraulically expanded seal to seal the RCD with the riser.

The exemplary embodiments relate to misalignment correction devices and methods for mitigating misalignment of a piece of oilfield equipment in or proximate an RCD. A rounded shoulder appears on a first surface within or proximate the RCD, and a socket profile appears on a second surface within or proximate the RCD. The second surface is configured to abut the rounded shoulder. The rounded shoulder is configured to rotate within the socket profile. Further, a floating joint may be implemented into or proximate the RCD and combined with the foregoing rotation mitigation features.

A control system comprising a tubular handling tool, comprising having a plurality of piston cylinders and a plurality of slips configured to engage a tubular string; and a volume synchronizer comprising: a first piston cylinder having a piston connected to a first rod member; a plate member connected to the first rod member; and a plurality of second piston cylinders, each having a piston connected to the plate member by a plurality of second rod members; wherein pressurized fluid supplied to the first piston cylinder moves the plate member to move each of the pistons in the second piston cylinders, thereby forcing pressurized fluid out of the second piston cylinders and simultaneously into the piston cylinders of the tubular handling tool, thereby actuating the slips into engagement with the tubular string.

A method of drilling a subsea wellbore includes drilling the subsea wellbore and, while drilling the subsea wellbore: measuring a flow rate of the drilling fluid injected into a tubular string; measuring a flow rate of returns; comparing the returns flow rate to the drilling fluid flow rate to detect a kick by a formation being drilled; and exerting backpressure on the returns using a first variable choke valve. The method further includes, in response to detecting the kick: closing a blowout preventer of a subsea pressure control assembly (PCA) against the tubular string; and diverting the flow of returns from the PCA, through a choke line having a second variable choke valve, and through the first variable choke valve.


Methods and apparatus for using multi-component geophones and/or multi-component geophone arrays to measure flow-induced acoustic energy produced in wellbores are provided. With the use of the multi-component geophones, the measured acoustic energy may be resolved into its directional components. The computed directional energy components may be mathematically compared to numerically highlight ambient flow conditions (e.g., leaks in casing or other conduit, points of fluid entry/exit/restrictions between the casing and the formation). The use of an array of multi-component geophones allows for the use of geophone move-out curves to further identify acoustic energy source locations.

A well pumping method can include reciprocably displacing a rod string, continuously determining a velocity profile of the rod string, and modifying the velocity profile while the rod string reciprocably displaces, in response to an output of a flowmeter. Another well pumping method can include reciprocably displacing a rod string with an actuator, continuously determining displacement in response to an output of a flowmeter, and modifying reciprocating displacement of the rod string by the actuator, in response to the output of the flowmeter.

An electronic control system comprises a first tubular handling tool (1000), a sensor, and a controller. The controller is configured to control actuation of the first tubular handling tool in response to an electronic signal received from the sensor that corresponds to an operational characteristic of the first tubular handling tool. A tubular handling system comprises the electronic control system, a gripping tool having an identification device and an actuation assembly configured to actuate the gripping tool. The tubular handling system further comprises a first sensor configured to transmit a signal to the electronic control system corresponding to information regarding the gripping tool that is retrieved or received from the identification device, wherein the electronic control system is configured to actuate the actuation assembly to actuate the gripping tool based on the information.


In a deviated wellbore, a pump system computes downhole data from surface data by solving a wave equation that takes both viscous damping and Coulomb friction into consideration. Mechanical friction between the rods, couplings, and tubing is considered in the calculation of downhole data in the deviated wellbore by modelling the wellbores trajectory, parameterizing various deviated segments (buildups, slants, drop-offs, etc.) in the trajectory, mapping the rod string to the segments, and incrementally evaluating position of the mapped string over time in order to compute drag forces and side loads experienced by the rod string during operation. These computed drag forces and side loads are then used in the solution of the wave equation to solve the surface load and position data and provide more accurate downhole position and load data.

Small profile apparatus for pressure and/or temperature sensing within a wellbore are provided. The apparatus may include optical sensing assemblies designed for inclusion in traditional or coiled production tubing deployments and suitable for use in high pressure, high temperature environments. One example assembly generally includes an outer housing, an inner housing at least partially disposed in the outer housing, a port for fluid communication between an internal volume of the inner housing and a volume external to the outer housing, and a large diameter optical waveguide disposed in the internal volume of the inner housing. The waveguide includes a first portion with a first grating and a second portion with a second grating, wherein the outer diameter of the large diameter optical waveguide is at least 300 m.
