The issue of protection of critical infrastructure is closely tied to abuse of toxic substances to disrupt or eliminate critical infrastructure elements of a state. The aim of the paper is to present the authors' view on the fundamental connection between the functionality of critical infrastructure, highly toxic substances, and public administration activities in the region of the Czech Republic. Systems approach has been applied to study relevant phenomena and processes holistically in their internal and external relationships, and to discover new and original contributions to the studied field. There is some evidence of the need for a cross-cutting role of ICT in protection of critical infrastructure.

Electrochemical methods provide high potential for investigation of antioxidant compounds, assessment of antioxidant capacity, and measurement of electrochemical index. Different types of electrodes can be used for the assay purposes. The devices can be stationary or flow through, and based on cyclic or differential pulse voltammetry as well as potentiostatic analysis. The methods are known for their suitability for food control and monitoring the levels of antioxidant capacity in other biological samples and matrices. In this review, the application of both stationary and flow electrochemical methods for analysis of plant and clinical samples with respect to study of their antioxidant properties is described. The advantages and disadvantages of the methods are discussed. © 2013 by ESG.

Ascorbic acid (AA) is a water-soluble vitamin essential in the human nutrition, an antioxidant, a scavenger of free radicals in biological systems and a cofactor of several enzymes. For the precise detection of AA concentration in biological samples there is important the option of the determination method. To the most common and exact methods for AA evaluation belong HPLC techniques with UV and electrochemical detection, and electrochemical methods (EM). EM are simple, sensitive, and moderate methods. For AA detection different types of electrodes are suitable, lately there are used especially various chemically modified electrodes with applied polymer films. Popular and profitable for accurate AA determination there are electrochemical biosensors and voltammetry that is reputable due to the low detection limits of AA. © 2015 The Authors.

Chinese hawthorn (Crataegus pinnatifida Bge.) fruits are rich in polyphenols (e.g., epicatechin, procyanidin B2, procyanidin B5, procyanidin C1, hyperoside, isoquercitrin and chlorogenic acid)-active compounds that exert beneficial effects. This review summarizes all information available on polyphenolic content and methods for their quantification in Chinese hawthorn berries and the relationships between individual polyphenolic compounds as well. The influence of species or cultivars, the locality of cultivation, the stage of maturity, and extract preparation conditions on the polyphenolic content were discussed as well. Currently, only fruits of C. pinnatifida and C. pinnatifida var. major are included in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia. Recent trials have demonstrated the efficacy of Chinese hawthorn fruit in lowering blood cholesterol and the risk of cardiovascular diseases. The fruit has also demonstrated anti-inflammatory and anti-tumour activities. This review deals mainly with the biological activity of the fruit related to its antioxidant properties. © 2012 by the authors; licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland.

Introduction. Saskatoon berry (Amelanchier alnifolia Nutt.) is a promising fruit species originating from North America. Among pomaceous fruits, saskatoon berries are a valuable source of chemical compounds with an antioxidant effect. Materials and methods. The total phenolic content, total flavonoid content and their correlation associated with the total antioxidant capacity of fruit of five particular cultivars were ascertained. Reactive oxygen species (specifically nitric oxide, superoxide anion and hydroxyl radical) and antioxidant activity in the liver lipid system of their methanolic extracts were also assessed. Results and discusssion. In saskatoon berry cultivars the total contents of phenolic compounds ranged from (2.52 to 3.82) g gallic acid Eq·kg-1 of fresh mass, while the values of total antioxidant capacity were observed to be from (4.17 to 5.29) g of ascorbic acid Eq·kg-1 of fresh mass. High correlation coefficients between phenolics as well as flavonoids and antioxidant capacity were calculated (r2 = 0.8921 and r2 = 0.9901, respectively). Nitric oxide, superoxide anion, hydroxyl radical and antioxidant activity in the liver lipid system of saskatoon berry fruit methanolic extracts (10%) were provided for the first time. In the case of nitric oxide, the inhibitions were 21.08-27.52%; as regards superoxide anion, they were 25.14-30.73%; concerning hydroxyl radical, 18.25-21.18%, and in respect of antioxidant activity in the liver lipid system, 7.90-8.38%. These inhibitions are stronger than, e.g., in apples which are the most important species of pomaceous fruit worldwide. Conclusions. Saskatoon berry fruit could be a suitable supplement for modern human nutrition. Furthermore, our work contributes to the popularisation of this pomaceous species, with the focus on its potential in relation to high antioxidant strength. © 2013 Cirad/EDP Sciences.
