Genetically modified plants can serve as highly efficient alternative for degradation of various dangerous organic pollutants such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), toluene and others from the environment. These compounds are persistent toxic xenobiotics difficult to destroy. The transfer of bacterial genes encoding dio- xygenases into plant genome may help to successfull and efficient phytoremediation. It was confirmed by transfer of the gene for 2,3-dihydroxybiphenyl-1,2-dioxygenase to plants Nicotiana tabacum. The decrease of toxic substrate in medium in the presence of transgenic tobacco was up to 54% higher than in the case of non transgenic plants. Genetically modified plants even produced higher amount of biomass and were more viable. Source

The effect of different intensity of Fusarium spp. infestation on DON content, bioethanol yield, starch content, falling number, grain yield and bioethanol production per ha was evaluated in frame of the exact field plot trial with 3 winter wheat varieties (Meritto, Akteur, Eurofit) and variants with different processes of artificial inoculation of wheat by Fusarium spp. and simultaneously several ways of fungicidal treatment against FHB. Fusarium spp. infestation of winter wheat led to negative affecting of all evaluated parameters. Bioethanol yield varied between 35.91 (artificially inoculated variant, strongly infected by Fusarium spp.) and 41.46 l.100 kg-1 of grain (check variant). Simultaneously, decrease of starch content in grain dry matter by about 2%, values of falling number by about 150 s, grain yield by about 1.5-2.5 t.ha-1, i.e. 24-30% was found in strongly infected variants in comparison with the check variant, resp. variant with protective fungicidal treatment. Ethanol production varied from 23.64 (artificially inoculated variant) to 31.40 (check variant) and 36.70 hl.ha-1 (variant with fungicidal treatment). Source

The paper is devoted to the organization of PhD studies at ICT Prague, Department of Carbohydrate Chemistry and Technology. The basic topics for full-time PhD students are related with polysaccharides. The article describes chosen polysaccharides, gives the used techniques, instrumentation and related references. Since 1993, 20 PhD students finished successfully their studies. Students working in food factories have proved themselves to be helpful for employers. Source
