A method is considered for preparing a hollow billet for producing a railcar hollow axle based on piercing in a two-roll screw rolling mill. A deformation regime and alignment of the screw rolling mill deformation zone are proposed in order to prepare a high quality especially thick-walled billet. Results are given for prior study of especially thick-walled pipe preparation for railcar hollow axles in the VMZ 70-270 pipe rolling unit. © 2014, Springer Science+Business Media New York.

Results obtained from mathematical modeling with the software package Deform 3D are used to demonstrate the feasibility of making railroad wheels from hollow semifinished products. Results are reported from modeling of the operations of upsetting on plane-parallel slabs, upsetting and fullering in a ring, and formation of the wheel. The conditions used in the modeling corresponded to the conditions encountered in actual wheel-making operations. © 2011 Springer Science+Business Media, Inc.

The effect of welded joint heat-affected zone (HAZ) cooling rate on structure, mechanical properties and brittle failure resistance of pipe steels of strength class X100 is studied by simulating welding thermal cycles in a Gleeble-3180 test unit. These properties are compared with results obtained with pipe welding, and good correlation of data obtained in a laboratory and for an actual pipe is demonstrated. It is also shown that the method for simulating thermal cycles makes it possible to evaluate properties of the heataffected zone without associated processing factors during actual pipe welding. Research results make it possible to establish the range of HAZ cooling rates providing preparation of the required values of longitudinal weld properties for pipe of considerable diameter made from steel of strength class X100. © 2014, Springer Science+Business Media New York.

The mechanical properties of thick rolled plate for main pipelines with a ferrite-bainite microstructure in different directions over the plate plane are determined, mechanical property anisotropy is revealed, and its features are studied. It is established that the structure of bainite, consisting of ferrite platelets with fine carbide interlayers along boundaries, orientated in a specific way in the plate plane with respect to the rolling direction, provokes propagation of a brittle crack and reduces metal cold resistance considerably in directions close to the preferred orientation of microstructural components. © 2011 Springer Science+Business Media, Inc.

Production of plates of strength category DNV SAWL 450 SFDU, intended for manufacturing pipe with a 39 mm wall thickness for submarine pipelines, is mastered under industrial conditions at the 5000 mill of Vyksa Metallurgical Plant (VMZ). The effect of chemical composition and steel manufacturing technology on features of microstructure formation (including its morphological features and excess phase precipitation) is studied. This makes it possible to formulate the optimum ferrite-bainite microstructure after TMT and provide the required strength level and cold resistance for plates, including manufacture of double length workpieces. © 2014 Springer Science+Business Media New York.
