Forward osmosis has found numerous applications in water treatment, water reuse, and other sectors e.g. desalination, concentration of wastewater, landfill leachate treatment, controlled drug release, emergency water treatment kit, etc. because of its low pressure operation and low fouling. The present paper demonstrates that the fertilizers can function as draw solution and be employed for drawing water from the brackish water. The proposed process eliminates the recovery step and the diluted draw solution can directly be utilized in fields for fertigation. We have selected fertilizers as a draw solution which provides nutrients to the crops for their basic growth. The domestic reverse osmosis membrane element has been converted to forward osmosis membrane element in a novel approach. The performance of each fertilizer is accounted in terms of experimentally obtained flux by comparing it with theoretically estimated flux. It has been found that there is a significant difference in experimentally obtained flux and theoretically estimated flux because of internal concentration polarization due to the presence of draw solution on permeate side and low availability of the effective membrane surface area. We have also investigated reverse draw solute diffusion for each fertilizer and the increase in concentration of feed solution to understand the movement of ions across the membrane. The reverse salt diffusion was observed in all three fertilizers studied with water as feed, however it was absent when sodium chloride feed solution was used. This shows that the presence of salt on feed side of the membrane suppresses the reverse salt diffusion on account of Donnan exclusion. © 2015 Balaban Desalination Publications. All rights reserved.

A novel blind Sigmoidoscopy and Colonoscopy image restoration is presented based on Shock filter with Coherence Edge Enhancing and adaption of Guided filter for reducing Staircase effect and Gradient Reversal artifacts. Using this method, clear images are obtained from degraded medical images without increasing noise and blur dimension. Experimental results show that the proposed method improves image quality in medical parameters, provide image compression and improvement in parameters like SSIM (Structure Similarity Index Measurement) as compared to conventional method. © 2015 IEEE.

The photocatalytic degradation of commonly used textile dyes, namely, Reactive Black-5 (RB-5), Red (ME4BL), Golden Yellow (MERL), Blue-222, Methylene Blue, and Malachite Green, has been studied, using TiO2 (P25) as a photocatalyst. All the dye solutions could be decolorized. Kinetics of RB-5 oxidation reaction has been studied and was found to be of first order in dye concentration. Effects of different parameters such as catalyst amount, initial concentration of the dyes, and pH of solution along with biological parameters (TOC and COD) on the rate of degradation were studied. Experimental results showed that photocatalytic degradation of commonly used RB-5 was very effective at the optimum catalyst quantity of 2.5 g/L.

The proposed work deals with the performance analysis of 4 × 4 and 8 × 8 multiple input multiple output (MIMO) wireless communication system to achieve higher spectral efficiency in Rayleigh and Rician fading distributions. The key channel model used is spatial multiplexing. Singular value decomposition is used to carry out the simulation of 4 × 4 and 8 × 8 MIMO channel. This scheme also employs the Waterfilling algorithm which allocates the power in all sub-channels improving the Spectral Efficiency. Next generation wireless communication systems require implementations of MIMO to realize higher spectral efficiency. © 2014, Springer Science+Business Media New York.

In the present study, photocatalytic degradation of reactive black-5 (RB-5) dye was investigated using supported TiO2 photocatalyst based adsorbent as a semiconductor photocatalyst in a batch reactor. The synthesized photocatalyst composition was developed using TiO2 as photoactive component and zeolite (ZSM-5) as the adsorbents. Attempts were also made to optimize the composition of the supported catalyst and to study the reliability of prepared catalyst. The optimum formulation of supported catalyst was found to be (TiO2: ZSM-5 = 0.15:1) which gave the highest efficiency with 98% degradation of 50 mg/L RB-5 solution in 90 min. Effect of different parameters such as initial concentration of dye solution, catalyst amount on the rate of photodegradation was also studied. The reduction in the chemical oxygen demand (COD, 88%) proves the mineralization of the RB-5 dye along with the colour removal. The supported TiO2 was found to be stable for repeated use. © Indian Academy of Sciences.
