In order to solve transfusion medicine problems in Russia, for filtration of blood and blood components there has been research and development of new nonwoven materials for leukofiltration which make it possible to provide the required degree of leukocyte removal from donor blood and blood components and to expand the range of domestic leukofiltration devices. We present the basic features which the filter material should have for leukofiltration. We evaluate the structural characteristics and physicochemical properties of nonwoven materials made by different methods. The studies were conducted using the standard procedure and using a procedure developed at the A. N. Kosygin Moscow State Textile University. Based on analysis of the literature and patents plus study of filter materials of foreign and domestic manufacture for leukofiltration of blood, we have worked out the specifications for new nonwoven materials to be used for leukofiltration of blood. © 2011 Springer Science+Business Media, Inc. We have used fine filamentary cellulose, polyester, and polyamide fibers to develop experimental samples of filter sets for filtration of blood and blood components. We have studied the chemical safety of the filter sets and their functional properties. The chemical safety of the filter sets was tested by means of special sanitary chemical and toxicological studies at the Testing Laboratory Center of the Physical and Chemical Medicine Research Institute (Russian Federal Biomedical Agency). We have obtained findings and protocols for the sanitary chemical and toxicological tests. The functional tests on the experimental samples of filter sets for filtration of blood and blood components, including determination of medical technological parameters of the filtered medium before and after leukofiltration, were conducted at the National Institute for Blood Substitutes and Medicinal Drugs and the Plasmapheresis Research Testing Facility (Russian Academy of Medical Sciences). © 2011 Springer Science+Business Media, Inc. We have analyzed the scientific and technical literature and filter materials for different types of foreign breathing filters providing effective bacterial and viral filtration, humidification and warming of breathing mixtures during anesthesia and mechanical lung ventilation, with the goal of designing domestic breathing filters. The object of investigation was breathing filters from foreign companies which are in high demand in Russian medical facilities. We have studied the filter materials in the most popular foreign breathing filters. We have established that the filter set for a bacterial/viral heat and moisture exchange (HME) filter consists of a primary filtering layer which provides highly efficient removal of bacteria and viruses from the air as a result of mechanical or electrostatic filtration; barrier layers, preventing migration of fibers and moisture droplets into the primary filtering layer; and a heat and moisture exchange layer, providing the needed humidity and temperature for the air inspired by the patient. As a result of our studies, we have selected or designed de novo filter materials to make a filter set for a domestic breathing filter. We have determined the parameters of the material for the heat and moisture exchange layer: weight percent of fibers, thickness, surface and volume density, air permeability, hygroscopicity, weight percent calcium chloride. © 2011 Springer Science+Business Media, Inc.
