The pilot ignition diesel engine technology is a highly efficient technology for the generation of combined heat and power from low calorific value gases in the capacity range clearly below 100 MW electric. Applications for this technology are e.g. the utilization of process gases from cupola furnaces and small blast furnaces. The pilot ignition diesel engine technology offers the opportunity for an efficient and ecologically sustainable use of low calorific value gases at small to medium-size applications in the iron and steel industry.

Sliding contacts in the boundary friction area (short sliding paths and low sliding speeds, high unsteady stresses, aggressive ambient conditions) can be found in a number of applications as, for instance, in grease-lubricated bearings of wind power plants, the steel industry or in plants of materials preparation technology. The sliding contact of a hybrid bearing for rolls in a continuous steel casting plant was optimized. In addition to the establishing of conditions for lifetime lubrication, it was an objective to improve the operating behavior. The examinations were carried out according to the principle of the tribological testing chain by different model tests, componentrelated tests, component tests and a concluding assessment by a field test in a continuous casting plant. Different lubricant varnish systems and alternative coating systems were examined and tested. In comparison to the lubricated reference system (steel - steel), a significant improvement of the tribological behavior could be achieved by applying lubricant varnish systems containing PTFE.
