The strain Clostridium beijerinckii CCM 6218 has been selected as the best solvent producer from a group of six tested clostridial strains with respect to the results achieved using sugar beet molasses and juice cultivation media. The bioreactor cultivation with this strain and cultivation medium containing sugar beet juice lead to butanol yield 26% and productivity 0.28 g.l-1.h-1 what were values completely comparable with published data summarizing results obtained with use of different saccharidic substrates. Thus, sugar beet juice proved to be a superior substrate for biobutanol production. Source

This work deals with the use of light-cycle oil from fluid catalytic cracking in the production of diesel fuel by hydrotreatment. Light-cycle oil, straight-run gas oil and their mixtures have been subjected to hydrotreatment using a commercial Co-Mo/Al2O3 catalyst in a laboratory flow reactor. The hydrotreatment significantly lowered S and N levels. Contents of diaromatics and polyaromatics were lowered by the hydrotreatment as well. Density, S, N and polyaromatics contents in the products increased with increasing light-cycle oil content in the feedstock. On the other hand, their viscosity and cetane index decreased with increasing content of light-cycle oil in the feedstock. The products that meet the performance requirements for diesel (EN 590) were prepared from the feedstock containing up to 10 wt.% of light-cycle oil. High density and high S content of light-cycle oil make impossible its extensive use in the production of diesel fuel. © 2014, Czech Society of Chemical Engineering. All rights reserved. Source

Production of the second-generation biofuels based on the biomass that is not primarily intended for food production is discussed. Production economy, problems associated with logistics of raw material as well as technological aspects are presented. In a long-term perspective the second-generation biofuels are more suitable sources of energy than those of the first generation. Production of bioethanol and biobutanol from lignocellulose or diesel fuel by hydrogenation/hydrocracking of vegetable oils are envisaged in the Czech Republic after 2015. Source

Biobutanol can be used as a biofuel in the same manner as bioethanol in spark-ignition engines. The article deals with the relevant properties of biobutanol-gasoline blend important for fuels such as density, viscosity, water solubility, vapour pressure and oxidation stability. Gasoline blends with 10 v/v % of biobutanol show properties close to those of ordinary gasoline, therefore biobutanol could be a promising alternative to ethanol currently used in automotive gasoline.
