Phytoestrogens are a structurally heterogenous group of plant polyphenols that are able to activate vertebrates estrogen receptors. Their main representatives in human diet are isoflavones and lignans. For more than twenty years, phytoestrogens are considered to alleviate menopausal symptoms. Pre-clinical trials have demonstrated their potential to act positively on bone metabolism, cardiovascular system, menopausal vasomotor symptoms and to decrease the risk of breast cancer. The evidence of clinically relevant effects of phytoestrogens is still rather limited. The menopausal women's choice of phytoestrogen food supplements is more often influenced by advertisement than by a physician's reccomendation.

Gene therapy is often used in clinical research. It is related to the delivery of nucleic acids and their components to patient by a vector. Most current vector techniques can be divided into viral and nonviral. Nonviral vectors, such as cationic liposomes, are less toxic, less immunogenic, and easier to prepare than viral vectors. Hence they are more attractive for clinical applications. This review focuses on the relations between the cationic lipid structure and its transfection activity. To understand the structure-activity relationships is of great importance for synthesis of novel cationic lipids.

Due to their photophysical and pharmacokinetic properties, porphyrin conjugates are used as photosensitisers in clinical practice, especially in photodynamic therapy (PDT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The use of porphyrins alone is limited because of their hydrophobicity, low cellular uptake and low selectivity. To suppress the disadvantages their conjugates with various natural products (saccharides, proteins, polymers or steroids) were tested. Porphyrin conjugates can be visualised after cellular uptake by fluorescence microscopy. Determination of their precise localization in the cell is crucial for further biological scenario control.
