Modern societies put emphasis on a better quality of human life. An important part of that seems to be healthy food. Food safety can be evaluated by chemical and microbiological assessment. The latter assessment is based on the methods used for food-borne pathogens. Samples of genetically modified (GM) and conventional soybeans were analyzed using DART-MS techniques. The metabolomic profiles of soybean 80% methanolic extracts were obtained. The data were processed by statistical analysis (OPLS-DA). The method can be used for differentiation of GM and conventional soybeans. © 2014, Czech Society of Chemical Engineering. G-quadruplexes are types of secondary structures of nucleic acids, which are formed in guanine-rich regions. Their existence in vivo was confirmed in promoter regions of some genes and at the end of chromosomes in the telomeric regions. The specific structure of G-quadruplexes is a promising target in cancer treatment. There is a search for small ligands, which could stabilize a specific type of G-quadruplexes. Cancer cells are markedly different from normal cells in the telomeric region: the regions are profoundly shorter. Telomeric regions in cancer cells are prolonged by an enzyme telomerase, while this enzyme is inactive in almost all somatic cells. Stabilization of telomeric G-quadruplex by a specific small ligand induces disruption of a normal protective function of telomers leading to cell damage and its death. This review provides an insight into the history of syntheses, functionalizations and applications of noble metal nanoparticles examining their interactions with polymer substrate. A survey of rapidly expanding literature on this topic is presented. The most challenging problems are outlined, among them finding new chemical and physical methods of functionalizing noble metal nanoparticles with compounds that can promote efficient binding and clearance. In addition, we present two procedures of grafting Au and Ag nanoparticles onto plasma-treated poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET). The changes in the surface physicochemical properties of modified PET, caused by plasma treatment and grafting with a dithiol and Au and Ag nanoparticles, were examined by TEM/ HRTEM, AFM, UV-Vis and XPS spectrometries and by electrokinetic analysis. We achieved a higher concentration of Au and Ag nanoparticles by deposition on PET modified with dithiol. The studied polymers can be used in medicine as a prevention of bacterial film formation. © 2014, Czech Society of Chemical Engineering. All rights reserved. Source

Tumor markers known also as cancer or oncological markers are substances produced either by tumor or normal cells as a response to the presence of cancer. The markers are used for the detection, diagnosis, prognosis and control of treatment. There is no absolutely specific or universal cancer marker; therefore different markers for different cancer types are used in clinical practice. A problematic feature of cancer markers is their falsely positive results under physiological and non-cancer conditions. Source
