Climatic changes, deficiency of arable land and a steady growth of population belong to the main problems of these days that lead to lack of food sources. This global problem can be partly solved by methods of genetic engineering, which are one of the most important instruments of biotechnologies. Genetic engineering enables the enables gaining of characteristics, the transfer of which, by methods of classic breeding, would not be possible or would take a few decades. To this day a wide variety of crops resistant to, e.g., insects, viruses, herbicides or abiotic stress was prepared. Special importance is placed on nutritionally enhanced plants or plants with remediation ability. In this review we focus on the most discussed transgenic plants, grown and consumed by millions of people, their advantages and benefits for the human health and the environment, as well as disadvantages or overlooked flaws. © 2017, Czech Society of Chemical Engineering. The presented review demonstrates that new psychoactive substances represent an increasingly popular form of recreational drugs. In recent years, primarily substances from the group of synthetic cannabinoids, synthetic cathinone and phenethylamines come to the fore. These synthetic substances pose a significant health risk for users and their early detection is desirable. Besides traditional instrumental methods, such as LC/MS or GC/MS, several user-friendly immunochemical methods were developed in connection with the analysis of synthetic cannabinoids, cathinones and phenethylamines, which can detect at least some members of these groups. © 2017, Czech Society of Chemical Engineering. This review provides an insight into the history of syntheses, functionalizations and applications of noble metal nanoparticles examining their interactions with polymer substrate. A survey of rapidly expanding literature on this topic is presented. The most challenging problems are outlined, among them finding new chemical and physical methods of functionalizing noble metal nanoparticles with compounds that can promote efficient binding and clearance. In addition, we present two procedures of grafting Au and Ag nanoparticles onto plasma-treated poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET). The changes in the surface physicochemical properties of modified PET, caused by plasma treatment and grafting with a dithiol and Au and Ag nanoparticles, were examined by TEM/ HRTEM, AFM, UV-Vis and XPS spectrometries and by electrokinetic analysis. We achieved a higher concentration of Au and Ag nanoparticles by deposition on PET modified with dithiol. The studied polymers can be used in medicine as a prevention of bacterial film formation. © 2014, Czech Society of Chemical Engineering. All rights reserved.

Samples of genetically modified (GM) and conventional soybeans were analyzed using DART-MS techniques. The metabolomic profiles of soybean 80% methanolic extracts were obtained. The data were processed by statistical analysis (OPLS-DA). The method can be used for differentiation of GM and conventional soybeans. © 2014, Czech Society of Chemical Engineering. This article summarizes basic information about the role of plant secondary metabolites in the remediation of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). Terpenes and phenolics are discussed more in detail with focus on their ability to stimulate microbial degradation of xenobiotics. The study points out that amendments of contaminated soil with plant secondary metabolites influences the removal of organic xenobiotics from soil. Many of these experiments have provided satisfactory results that can be used to improve bioremediation techniques.


Modern societies put emphasis on a better quality of human life. An important part of that seems to be healthy food. Food safety can be evaluated by chemical and microbiological assessment. The latter assessment is based on the methods used for food-borne pathogens. In the last decades rapid techniques were developed and validated by immunochemical and molecular biology methods (ELISA, PCR), including genotypization of isolated bacteria.

Tumor markers known also as cancer or oncological markers are substances produced either by tumor or normal cells as a response to the presence of cancer. The markers are used for the detection, diagnosis, prognosis and control of treatment. There is no absolutely specific or universal cancer marker; therefore different markers for different cancer types are used in clinical practice. A problematic feature of cancer markers is their falsely positive results under physiological and non-cancer conditions.

A rapid strip test for semiquantitative or quantitative screening of thiabendazole in some fruit foods (fruits, fruit juices, baby foods) was developed, which is based on lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA). Test parameters such as membranes and buffers types, the amount and type of antibodies for labeling with gold nanoparticles, and dilution of gold-labeled antibodies and samples were optimized. The strip contains all the necessary reagents dried on membranes. The test can be accomplished within 10 min. The visual limit of detection was 2 ng ml-1. For quantitative assessment a standard curve of LFIA was produced with detection limit of 0.1±0.02 ng ml-1, the IC50 value of 2.2 ng ml-1, and the linear working range of 0.4-20 ng ml-1. In the test, spiked samples were analyzed. Samples of fruit juices or fruit homogenate filtrates were diluted with buffer and analysed directly without any purification. The coefficients of inter-assay variation were below 16 %, with recoveries ranging from 91 to 112 %. The proposed LFIA test enables a sensitive, rapid, and facile on-site screening of thiabendazole.


G-quadruplexes are types of secondary structures of nucleic acids, which are formed in guanine-rich regions. Their existence in vivo was confirmed in promoter regions of some genes and at the end of chromosomes in the telomeric regions. The specific structure of G-quadruplexes is a promising target in cancer treatment. There is a search for small ligands, which could stabilize a specific type of G-quadruplexes. Cancer cells are markedly different from normal cells in the telomeric region: the regions are profoundly shorter. Telomeric regions in cancer cells are prolonged by an enzyme telomerase, while this enzyme is inactive in almost all somatic cells. Stabilization of telomeric G-quadruplex by a specific small ligand induces disruption of a normal protective function of telomers leading to cell damage and its death. In the last decade, several immunoassays have been published as the alternative/complementary rapid methods for steroid analysis in food supplements. The present review shows a significant amount of food supplements containing banned anabolic androgenic steroids that are not declared as ingredients thus presenting risk for consumers and may lead to positive results in anti-doping controls. Traditional methods for analysis of steroids such as LC/ MS and GC/MS were used for monitoring suspect food supplements. © 2015, Libertas Academica Ltd. All rights reserved.
