The requirement is investigated for microalloying steel of strength class K60 with vanadium using thermomechanical rolling technology followed by accelerated cooling from the point of view of changing rolled product microstructure and mechanical properties. Weldability is studied for two high-strength pipe steels of strength class K60 with different microalloying based on modelling physical processes occurring in heat-affected zone (HAZ) metal, and correlation of cooling rate (heat input during welding) with HAZ metal structure and properties. Test steel HAZ metal structure and properties are described in relation to welding parameters. The optimum cooling rate range after welding is established providing the maximum level of HAZ metal impact strength. This article substantiates the expediency of improving the fluxing ability of limestone and describes new methods for increasing fluxing activity when limestone is being prepared for sintering at crushing-sorting plants. It is shown that sinter plants can pre-clean the limestone by drying it with hot waste gases from under the sintering-machine grates and that it can then be re-cleaned by friction concentration. Results are presented from studies of the effect of the fluxing activity of limestone on the unit productivity of sintering machines and the strength of the sinter. © 2011 Springer Science+Business Media, Inc.

A study is made of the effect of the addition of dolomite to the charge used in sintering a mixture of Mikhailovskii and Lebedinskii concentrates and Bakal and Mikhailovskii ores. The operating conditions and performance indices of the sinter plant at Ural Steel are analyzed along with the conditions under which the charge is prepared for sintering. The main technical and technological factors that are limiting the performance indices are identified and ways of improving the charge-preparation technology at Ural Steel are proposed. Laboratory studies were conducted to improve the balling of the charge by optimizing the conditions under which lime is used and moistening the charge with an aqueous solution of a surface-active agent (surfactant) during the mixing and balling operations. The use of briquets made from metallurgical sludges to close the tapholes of steelmaking furnaces reduces the need for sinter without affecting the heat time. The use of metal concentrates in sinter production at Ural Steel has made it possible to reduce the consumption of imported iron-ore-bearing raw materials (concentrates, pellets), lower the production costs of sinter and pig iron, and make cast iron for ingot molds that contains more manganese than synthetic cast iron. Given the high rate of injection of steel with oxygen in modern high-power arc steelmaking furnaces (close to the rate attained in basic oxygen furnaces), the purity of the oxygen becomes the deciding factor in determining the nitrogen content of the steel. An analysis is made of the factors that affect nitrogen content in the production of steel in modern electric-arc furnaces at Ural Steel. A method is described for processing iron-and-zinc-bearing sludge and dust. The method uses the Waelz process to solve the problem of utilizing zinc-bearing wastes and increase the amount of finely dispersed metallurgical wastes that is recycled. The article describes the results of laboratory and factory tests performed at Ural Steel to determine the properties of the sinter and other products obtained by Waelz smelting. Results are also presented from studies of the mechanism of interaction of the components of the charge, which consists of metallurgical wastes that contain iron, zinc, and carbon. The interactions of the components are examined after their pelletizing and during the pellets' reductive smelting. Technical and technological measures for introducing the Waelz process are proposed based on an analysis of the test results. © 2014 Springer Science+Business Media New York.
