Blood glucose self-monitoring (SBGM) is a valuable therapeutic tool that must be prescribed according to specific guidelines and procedures that fit within an overall care plan. Though there is general agreement on its utility in patients with type 1 diabetes, there is still debate about its use in type 2 diabetes. Though national and international recommendations provide clear indications for its use and the frequency of measurements for different types of patient, correct application is often problematic in clinical practice. This article describes the methods employed by the Brescia Hospital’s Diabetology Service and the operating procedure on which they are based, for the comprehensive management of SBGM in people with type 1 and type 2 diabetes.
