Leading higher education information and resource site AffordableCollegesOnline.org has released its list of the Best Online Accelerated Nursing Degrees & Programs in the nation for 2016-2017. Using a variety of cost and educational outcome data to compare accredited programs side by side, the list rates the University of Saint Mary, University of Wyoming, The Sage Colleges, University of Indianapolis and Samford University as the top-scoring schools for accelerated nursing students. "As the demand for qualified nurses grows, more colleges are implementing fast-track education options for nursing students,” said Dan Schuessler, CEO and Founder of AffordableCollegesOnline.org. They must also offer students job placement and academic counseling services to qualify. A leading resource for higher education and student resources, AffordableCollegesOnline.org, has released its list of Kansas’ Best Online Colleges for 2016-2017. The site analyzed a mixture of data on both two-year and four-year schools, ranking the following colleges and universities in the top five: Fort Hayes State University, Washburn University, Sterling College, Newman University and Manhattan Christian College for four-year schools; Allen County Community College, Kansas City Kansas Community College, Barton County Community College, Hutchinson Community College and Seward County Community College for two-year schools. "More than 100,000 students enrolled in college programs in Kansas last year, and nearly half of those were non-residents” said Dan Schuessler, CEO and Founder of AffordableCollegesOnline.org. "There is a growing opportunity for colleges in Kansas to offer distance or online learning programs to their students, and the schools on our list are the ones who have already made a point to emphasize high-quality online education.” To be considered for the Best Online Colleges in Kansas list, schools were required to meet several minimum criteria points. All colleges must hold regional accreditation and be public or private not-for-profit entities to qualify. Affordability standards were also set at $5,000 or less for in-state tuition at two-year schools and $25,000 or less for in-state tuition at four-year schools. Each college earned its rank by analysis and comparison of more than a dozen unique data points, including financial aid stats and graduation rates. A total of 33 schools were recognized for providing top-quality online learning programs. Of the 18 four-year schools that were ranked, University of Kansas, Kansas State University, Baker University, Southwestern University and Wichita State University came in as the top five institutions. The electron density and the electrostatic potential are fundamentally related to the molecular hamiltonian, and hence are the ultimate source of all properties in the ground- and excited-states. The advantages of using molecular descriptors derived from these fundamental scalar fields, both accessible from theory and from experiment, in the formulation of quantitative structure-to-activity and structure-to-property relationships, collectively abbreviated as QSAR, are discussed. A few such descriptors encode for a wide variety of properties including, for example, electronic transition energies, pKa's, rates of ester hydrolysis, NMR chemical shifts, DNA dimers binding energies, π-stacking energies, toxicological indices, cytotoxicities, hepatotoxicities, carcinogenicities, partial molar volumes, partition coefficients (log P), hydrogen bond donor capacities, enzyme-substrate complementarities, bioisosterism, and regularities in the genetic code. Electronic fingerprinting from the topological analysis of the electron density is shown to be comparable and possibly superior to Hammett constants and can be used in conjunction with traditional bulk and liposolubility descriptors to accurately predict biological activities. A new class of descriptors obtained from the quantum theory of atoms in molecules' (QTAIM) localization and delocalization indices and bond properties, cast in matrix format, is shown to quantify transferability and molecular similarity meaningfully. Properties such as "interacting quantum atoms (IQA)" energies which are expressible into an interaction matrix of two body terms (and diagonal one body "self" terms, as IQA energies) can be used in the same manner. The proposed QSAR-type studies based on similarity distances derived from such matrix representatives of molecular structure necessitate extensive investigation before their utility is unequivocally established. © 2014 The Author and the Journal of Computational Chemistry Published by Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Regarding the mortality causes, esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is on the 7th place in the US and the 6th place in the world, with 5 year overall survival rate of 14%, which is still modest in comparison to other digestive neoplasia. Multiples strategies were involved to improve this percentage, associating surgical procedures and chemo- and radio- oncologic therapies. The distant results showed sensitive improvement, after introduction of multimodality neoadjuvant therapies. Fifty-seven patients diagnosed with ESCC were evaluated between 2006 and 2010, male preponderance (77%), average age of 55. A multimodality therapeutic protocol was used: first - radio-chemotherapy (RCT), second - surgery and/or third - chemo- or radiotherapy. Four weeks post RCT all patients were evaluated to determine the response to neoadjuvant treatment followed by surgery - esophageal resection. Histopathological (HP) and immunohistochemical (IHC) analysis of the pathological specimens were performed in order to identify the molecular predictors with responsive or non responsive character; the studied markers were p53 (Dako 1:50), Ki-67 (Biogenex, 1:20), c-erbB-2 (Dako, 1:250). Based on these results, the working model used to determine the response to neoadjuvant therapy was tumor regression grade (TRG). After HP and IHC examination, the patients were included in two groups: responders and non responders (tumor cells > 10%). Complete neoplasia sterilization was achieved in 5 of the patients. We are able to state that the identification of potential predictive markers along with HP and IHC results represents a great perspective alternative in the ESCC therapy outcome. The detection of molecular type aggressiveness of the neoplastic process allows therapeutic orientation or guidance to certain therapy sequences or even to specific molecular targeted treatments. Through this S-STEM project, the University of Saint Mary (USM) is supporting a total of 14 academically talented students with financial need who are majoring in biology, chemistry, or mathematics through scholarships and a coordinated set of student support structures. The project goals of increasing the number of students enrolled in these majors at USM by 16%, increasing the retention rates in these programs by 12%, and graduating 80% of the Scholars within four years align with the workforce needs in the Kansas City area and statewide. Moreover, USM is leveraging partnerships with local industries to engage students through monthly lecture series, service learning projects, and coordinated internship opportunities.
USM is implementing a holistic set of evidence-based interventions and practices shown to increase retention and success, including as a two-semester First Year Experience program that incorporates service learning projects and develops students study, critical thinking, and writing skills, tutoring, and peer review sessions. Scholars also participate in bi-weekly individual advising and cohort meetings and professional development activities, which are intended to support student success. Formal structures that provide scholars opportunities to participate in research or internships are expected to increase the retention of the scholars and provide career preparation. These professional development and research-oriented activities are strategies for the project to achieve the goal that 75% of Scholars are employed in a STEM field or enter a STEM graduate program within one year of graduation.
