Independent living of senior citizens is one of the main challenges linked to the ageing population, due to the impact on: (a) the life of the elderly people, (b) the national health systems, (c) the insurance companies, (d) the relatives and (e) the care-givers. Senior citizens may suffer from a number of diseases, including the decline in cardiopulmonary conditions, weaker muscle functions and a declined neuromuscular control of the movements, which result in a higher risk of fall and a higher vulnerability for cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases. With respect to cognitive functions, senior citizens may suffer from a decline of memory function, less ability to orientate and a declined ability to cope with complex situations. Mild dementia is another disease affecting this population, which requires either the institutionalization or the constant support from care-givers.eWALL will be an affordable, easy-to-install prefabricated wall that can be mounted on an existing wall and includes, into the background, all the ICT technology needed to enable a number of services for the senior citizen to cover the major ontologies of Active and Healthy Ageing. The project will carry out high-risk and multi-disciplinary research and will have a large-scale demonstrator exercise for validating the concept with solid clinical evidence. This will include both technical-, user- and legal-evaluation, to measure with advanced tools and methodologies the impact on the QoL. The eWALL system will extend the state-of-the-art of Assistive Platforms and will significantly increase the independent living of seniors. The project will also perform socio-economic studies to deliver recommendations for the health sector that will result in mid- and long-term benefits for the sustainability of national health systems.

The LEXNET project addresses key factors of human exposure to electromagnetic fields(EMF) induced by wireless telecommunication networks and low exposuretechnologies. The wireless communication systems that are nowadays intensively usedhave induced fears to the general population about possible health impact. To date noadverse health effect has been established but recently the International Agency forResearch on Cancer has classified radio frequency electromagnetic fields as possiblycarcinogenic to humans. Such context may curb the general public from using innovativewireless systems. The goal of the LEXNET project is to investigate technologies andarchitectures to reduce the total human exposure without compromising the usersperceived quality in the frequency bands used for cellular and wireless local areanetworks (700 MHz to 6 GHz). EMF exposure is often assessed with access points anddevices considered separately. The real exposure induced by a network requires assessingthe averaged exposure encountered during human activities (working, travelling, etc.) andmust consider jointly the up- and downlinks of different systems. The project will definea suitable index of exposure (Iexp), which will consider exposure as a composition ofsituations encountered in various scenarios (e.g. percentages at home, travelling, etc).The acceptability of such index will be discussed with stakeholders. To reduce the Iexpof existing and future networks, the LEXNET project will analyse different options (e.g.radio components, interference management, power control, cell discontinuoustransmission, network selection and network nodes reconfiguration). The findings will bedemonstrated through a deployment in a smart city and validation platforms for proof ofconcept. The project will contribute to scientific knowledge and initiate a specificsymposium to discuss with stakeholders such as national authorities in charge of theseaspects (e.g. CEPT, ANFR and OfCom).

Environmental policies focus on protecting habitats valuable for their biodiversity, as well as producing energy in cleaner ways. The establishment of Marine Protected Area (MPA) networks and installing Offshore Wind Farms (OWF) are important ways to achieve these goals. The protection and management of marine biodiversity has focused on placing MPAs in areas important for biodiversity. This has proved successful within the MPAs, but had little impact beyond their boundaries. In the highly populated Mediterranean and the Black Seas, bordered by many range states, the declaration of extensive MPAs is unlikely at present, so limiting the bearing of protection. The establishment of MPAs networks can cope with this obstacle but, to be effective, such networks must be based on solid scientific knowledge and properly managed (not merely paper parks). OWF, meanwhile, must be placed where the winds are suitable for producing power, but they should not have any significant impact on biodiversity and ecosystem functioning, or on human activities. The project will have two main themes: 1 - identify prospective networks of existing or potential MPAs in the Mediterranean and the Black Seas, shifting from a local perspective (centred on single MPAs) to the regional level (network of MPAs) and finally the basin scale (network of networks). The identification of the physical and biological connections among MPAs will elucidate the patterns and processes of biodiversity distribution. Measures to improve protection schemes will be suggested, based on maintaining effective exchanges (biological and hydrological) between protected areas. The national coastal focus of existing MPAs will be widened to both off shore and deep sea habitats, incorporating them into the networks through examination of current legislation, to find legal solutions to set up transboundary MPAs. 2 - explore where OWF might be established, producing an enriched wind atlas both for the Mediterranean and the Black Seas. OWF locations will avoid too sensitive habitats but the possibility for them to act as stepping-stones through MPAs, without interfering much with human activities, will be evaluated. Socioeconomic studies employing ecosystem services valuation methods to develop sustainable approaches for both MPA and OWF development will also be carried out, to complement the ecological and technological parts of the project, so as to provide guidelines to design, manage and monitor networks of MPAs and OWF. Two pilot projects (one in the Mediterranean Sea and one in the Black Sea) will test in the field the assumptions of theoretical approaches, based on previous knowledge, to find emerging properties in what we already know, in the light of the needs of the project. The project covers many countries and involves researchers across a vast array of subjects, in order to achieve a much-needed holistic approach to environmental protection. It will help to integrate the Mediterranean and Black Seas scientific communities through intense collective activities, combined with strong communications with stakeholders and the public at large. Consequently, the project will create a permanent network of excellent researchers (with cross fertilization and further capacity building) that will also work together also in the future, making their expertise available to their countries and to the European Union.

The BELLA-S1 proposal aims to provide for the long-term interconnectivity needs of the European and Latin American research and education networks, and answers the call for transatlantic connectivity to Latin America in the H2020 Work Programme 2014-15. The objective will be to strengthen connectivity to Latin America ensuring very high capacity, cost benefits and the shortest possible route, whilst stimulating diversity over the transatlantic segment. The objective will be met in two phases: phase one will procure an indefeasible right of use for a portion of the spectrum of a direct submarine telecommunications cable between Europe and Latin America; phase two will deploy one or more wavelengths, as required, on the spectrum procured to interconnect the GANT and RedCLARA networks, and provide for the intercontinental connectivity needs of the European and Latin American research and education communities.

The overall objective is to provide a stable environment for the implementation of GANT as the European Communications Commons for the European Research Area, which will provide the best possible digital infrastructure to ensure that Europe remains in the forefront of research. GANTs extensive and long-standing contacts with large data disciplines such as biology, radioastronomy and high-energy physics help shape the evolution of the networking facilities required. This is complemented by partner contacts with research domains that are new users of high-performance networks and services, such as: digital preservation, real-time art and humanities. The vision is to position the GANT partnership optimally to achieve the strategic objectives of the FPA while ensuring the continuity and improvement of the services successfully offered under the GN3plus FP7 project. The extensive experience of the GANT partnership in providing high-quality and innovative services has been applied to the preparation phase of this proposal. The following GN4-1 work package objectives deserve to be highlighted: Maintain and enhance the production service and achieve cost reductions without negative effects on network service levels. Coordinate with the other European e-infrastructure efforts both individually and in the framework of the increased coordination effort. Prepare a new round of Open Call projects to start immediately after the end of the GN4-1 project. Expand the footprint and the depth of services offered to roaming users with enhanced trust and identity services through Federation as a Service and with group and attribute management added to eduGAIN. Develop online real-time services to improve the ease and function of videconferencing, open learning support and general multimedia use. Review the existing service catalogue using the Product Lifecycle Management process to assess the cost/benefits of each carefully to define the future service strategy.

This proposal details activities that will ensure the continued enhancement and ongoing operation of the leading-edge GANT network, supporting a range of network and added-value services, targeted at users across the GANT service area.\nIn the area of multi-domain network service operation, GN3plus plans to deliver fast, efficient provisioning of advanced services, develop operational support across management domains, and improve security to ensure service integrity and protect network resources. These initiatives will be complemented by the development of application services in a federated environment such as mobile and wireless roaming supported by safe and secure Authentication and Authorisation Infrastructure.\nNetworking Activities will provide management and support for all GN3plus activities through communication, promotion, international liaison and business development. Emphasis will be placed on supporting and encouraging service take-up among users by working closely with NRENs. GANT will increase digital inclusion through closer collaboration between NRENs, exchange of staff and specialist expertise, as well as by seeking synergies between public administrations and the GN3plus partners using their vast, shared knowledge base.\nJoint Research Activities will be targeted at providing critical analyses of future network and application technologies, with a view to future deployment of emerging technologies within and outside the GANT community.\nThe governance model aims to increase effectiveness and user influence. The GN3plus Partners Assembly will deal with overall policy and an Executive Board will oversee its implementation. An International User Advisory Committee and External Advisory Committee will ensure users views and senior industry and service provider expertise are channelled directly to the Assembly. Specialised Advisory Boards will ensure highly efficient decision making, and that the voice of the stakeholder community is heard.

GN4-2 is the proposed project for the second Specific Grant Agreement under the 68-month Framework Partnership Agreement (FPA) established between the GANT Consortium and the European Commission in April 2015.This second phase of implementing the FPA will raise European research to the next level by promoting scientific excellence, access and re-use of research data. It will also drive European-wide cost efficiencies in scientific infrastructure by promoting interoperability with other e-infrastructures on an unprecedented scale. The FPA objective for the GANT Partnership is to contribute to effective European research by making Europe the best-connected region in the world. GANT must offer European researchers the network, communications facilities and application access that ensure the digital continuum necessary to conduct world-class research in collaboration with their peers, regardless of geographical location. GANT will maintain the operational excellence of the established GANT services, while achieving economies on the costs of the backbone network. The reliable, secure and state-of-the-art network services offered to researchers and other network users across Europe will remain exceptional. Massive data-transfer capacities required by extreme-scale instruments and by the penetration of big data in many areas of science will be prototyped with due consideration to the specific security and deployment challenges. Trust and identity is also prioritised with the introduction of a scalable operational model and with user requirements addressed in close concertation with the AARC and proposed AARC2 projects. GN4-2 developments are also guided by the vision of a future where a set of coherent and integrated European e-infrastructure services will offer convenient, seamless access for end-users through a common service catalogue, and facilitating the adoption of services offered by new e-infrastructure developments, such as the European Open Science Cloud.

In the last decade, a number of initiatives were crucial for enabling high-quality research - by providing e-Infrastructure resources, application support and training - in both South East Europe (SEE) and Eastern Mediterranean (EM). They helped reduce the digital divide and brain drain in Europe, by ensuring access to regional e-Infrastructures to new member states, states on path to ascension, and states in European Neighborhood Policy area in total 14 countries in SEE and 6 in EM. This VI-SEEM proposal brings together these e-Infrastructures to build capacity and better utilize synergies, for an improved service provision within a unified Virtual Research Environment (VRE) for the inter-disciplinary scientific user communities in the combined SEE and EM regions (SEEM). The overall objective is to provide user-friendly integrated e-Infrastructure platform for regional cross-border Scientific Communities in Climatology, Life Sciences, and Cultural Heritage for the SEEM region; by linking compute, data, and visualization resources, as well as services, models, software and tools. This VRE will provide the scientists and researchers with the support in full lifecycle of collaborative research: accessing and sharing relevant research data, using it with provided codes and tools to carry out new experiments and simulations on large-scale e-Infrastructures, and producing new knowledge and data - which can be stored and shared in the same VRE. Climatology and Life Science communities are directly relevant for Societal Challenges. The driving ambition of this proposal is to maintain leadership in enabling e-Infrastructure based research and innovation in the region for the 3 strategic regional user communities: supporting multidisciplinary solutions, advancing their research, and bridging the development gap with the rest of Europe. The VI-SEEM consortium brings together e-Infrastructure operators and Scientific Communities in a common endeavor.

This paper presents a control technique for torque-ripple minimization in the switched reluctance motor (SRM) drive, based on a torque-sharing function (TSF) concept. In the proposed method, the reference torque is directly translated into the reference current waveform using the analytical expression. Optimization criteria of a TSF that are concerned with secondary objectives, such as minimization of copper losses or maximization of drive performance, are described. In addition, a novel family of TSFs is introduced. An optimal TSF can be easily extracted from the proposed family to satisfy one of the secondary objectives or to create balance between more of them. Control performances of the two extracted TSFs and the two optimized conventional (linear and sinusoidal) TSFs are compared. These four TSFs keep the copper losses to nearly the theoretical minimum. Each of them provides approximately the same operation efficiency of the considered three-phase 6/4 SRM drive. However, due to extension of the commutation angle between adjacent phases, TSFs from the proposed family provide better torque-speed characteristics. Moreover, one of them expands the possible speed range of torque-ripple-free drive operation, and another one, which provides the best torque-speed characteristics, reduces the peak phase current. © 2011 IEEE.

University of Montenegro (UoM) is an actor of excellence for education and research in the field of ICT in Montenegro. More precisely, this position is attained and maintained through activities organized and performed at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering (FEE), being one of the UoM founding units . Fore-Mont aims at strengthening the UoM(FEE)s excellence by improving its research infrastructure, human resources fostering and long-term partnerships. The project will create a strong synergy in research from the three current UoM(FEE) research groups working in the field of ICT. Indeed, through Fore-Mont, these groups will merge to provide a research centre dedicated to the innovative research in info-communication infrastructures and e-services engineering: Research Centre for Info-Communication Technologies. The Fore-Mont project will rely on 5 partners from 5 different countries all over EU, and will be supported by 8 entities, from state authorities to SMEs, industries or regional organisations. Measurable objectives are the acquisition of important pieces of equipment; the implementation of a new centre dedicated to joint research; the hiring of three experienced researchers (one dedicated to the Intellectual Property development plan); intense mobility trainings (15 outgoing,15 incoming experienced researchers);3 international conferences;1 regional conference; 3 workshops; participation to 3 scientific and industrial events to promote the project steps and results. Through these measures the new centre will be recognized as the leading research entity in the country for the ICT, when it comes to the advanced solutions for info-communication infrastructures, smart applications and e-services, as well as internationally recognized reliable partner. This project will support UoM(FEE) to integrate into ERA, becoming the major actor in ICT innovative research at national/regional level and a competent partner for Horizon2020 projects. Finally, the UoM(FEE) will create opportunities to be granted patents and to provide applied solutions and products in different domains which will reach expectations and demands of e-Montenegro development.
