A digital decoder is provided that controls the number of on and off transitions so that the resulting signal does not contain noise or distortion. The invention provides mechanical devices that can be used to combine reagents and discover their effects on living cells. A device of the invention holds liquids in open-ended channels and transfers liquids from one channel to another by bringing a second channel into proximity and alignment with an open end of a first channel. Channels of the device can include fluid partitions (e.g., water-oil-water emulsions) that include living cells. The device includes a mechanical system the operation of which causes a receiving channel to pass among supply channels, aligning with each in turn, to pick up chemicals from those channels and make new combinations within the receiving channel. The device then presents those new chemical combinations to the living cells within their respective partitions, thereby allowing for the determination of the effects of those combinations on living cells.

Mesoporous silicates (MPS) are attractive materials for the immobilisation of enzymes. They possess ordered pore structures, narrow pore size distributions, large surface areas, high stability and can be chemically modified with various functional groups. The properties of MPS materials are reviewed in terms of their ability to act as supports for enzymes for use in biocatalysis with a particular focus on the ability to tailor the surface functionalization of the MPS to suit a specific enzyme. While many reports of the immobilisation of enzymes on MPS have been described, their use as biocatalytic supports is limited. Large scale reactors based on MPS will require continuous flow systems where the properties of the support can be tailored while allowing fluid flow at reasonable low pressure. © 2013 The Royal Society of Chemistry.
