The analysis of tests conducted on small-scale slabs at ambient and elevated temperatures is presented in this paper. The slabs were produced from a new type of concrete containing different levels of glass sand and basalt fibre. Two methods were used for this purpose: a simplified method developed previously and a finite element method, using the software package ABAQUS. For the slabs at ambient temperature, the results showed a good correlation for the load-displacement relationship between the test and the two models up to the failure loads. For the slabs at elevated temperature, the ABAQUS model gave a reasonable prediction for the temperature-displacement relationship while the simplified method gave a conservative prediction for the maximum allowable vertical displacement. As a result, the simplified method underestimated the temperature at which the reinforcement fracture occurs for this type of concrete slab, incorporating glass sand and basalt fibres. Further work is required to remove this conservatism from the simplified design method for this type of concrete. © 2013 RILEM.

Small-scale slab tests at ambient and elevated temperatures, conducted on horizontally unrestrained simply supported slabs, are presented in this paper. The aim of this research is to investigate the structural behaviour of concrete produced from different percentages of glass sand (20, 40, and 60 % by weight) and reinforced with different volume fractions of basalt fibre (0, 0.1, 0.3, and 0.5 % by total mix volume), when subjected to large vertical displacement. The results were also compared against similar structural members with concrete that did not contain glass or fibres. The results showed that the fracture of the reinforcement was the mode of failure for all the slabs and the load carrying capacity was enhanced above the theoretical yield-line load. For the slabs tested at elevated temperatures, the enhancement due to membrane action was at least twice as high as that recorded in the ambient temperature tests. The slabs with higher glass sand and basalt fibre content also exhibited greater enhancement and failed at higher displacement. The results also showed that the enhancement in the concrete with glass aggregate and basalt fibre was greater than that in concrete that contained no glass or fibre by up to 26 and 31 % at ambient temperature and in fire respectively. © 2013 RILEM.

A Bayesian stochastic search variable selection (BSSVS) method is presented for variable selection in quantile regression (QReg) for ordinal models. A Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method is adopted to draw the unknown quantities from the full posteriors. Through simulations and analysis of an educational attainment dataset, the performance of the proposed approach is compared with some existing approaches, showing that the proposed approach performs quite good in comparison to some other methods. © 2016 Elsevier B.V.

Studied quality wells University of AL-Qadisiya was the identification and selection of five wells distributed in separate colleges. Some physical and chemical tests and a full year of biomass (from January 2015 until December of the same year). chemical analyses of major ions (Ca2, Mg2, Na+, K+, SO4 =) function calculated pH conductivity and total dissolved solids. Validity has been determined these water wells for irrigation purposes through the use of sodium adsorption ratio(S.A.R.) and percentage of sodium, conductivity and appropriate study results showed both acid function and the percentage of sodium Na% based on the classification of global measurements for irrigation while there were increases in most standards examined the results of the study also indicated the absence of harm from the use of water wells, University based on adsorption of sodium, except English well water was moderately. The biological aspect in this study has involved identifying some types of algae in the water wells, and Bacillariophyceae formed the highest number of species of phytoplankton in the study area.

Many Lepelletier-type automatic transmissions are in production. Some of Lepelletier related configurations are still far from reaching maximum possible sequential speed ratios. This work focuses on analyzing and developing twelve-link three-DOF Lepelletier-type automatic transmissions to attain maximum speed ratios. Following the general trend of increased shift stages and a wider range of speed ratios, new ten-speed automatic transmissions are enumerated from the twelve-link three-DOF Lepelletier gear mechanisms. Furthermore, a ten-speed automatic transmission is modified from an existing eight-speed Lepelletier-type automatic transmission. The results show that the twelve-link three-DOF Lepelletier gear mechanism could reach eleven forward speeds at most. Nomographs are shown to be practical in detecting possible configurations and their clutching sequences. © 2016, The Korean Society of Mechanical Engineers and Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

This paper introduces a Bayesian approach for composite quantile regression employing the skewed Laplace distribution for the error distribution. We use a two-level hierarchical Bayesian model for coefficient estimation and future selection which assumes a prior distribution that favors sparseness. An efficient Gibbs sampling algorithm is developed to update the unknown quantities from the posteriors. The proposed approach is illustrated via simulation studies and two real datasets. Results indicate that the proposed approach performs quite good in comparison to the other approaches. © 2016 International Chinese Statistical Association

The concept of potential power efficiency is introduced as the efficiency of an epicyclic gear train (EGT) measured in any moving reference frame. The conventional efficiency can be computed in a carrier-moving reference frame in which the gear carrier appears relatively fixed. In principle, by attaching the reference frame to an appropriate link, torques can be calculated with respect to each input, output, or (relatively) fixed link in the EGT. Once the power flow direction is obtained from the potential power ratio, the torque ratios are obtained from the potential power efficiencies, the particular expression of the efficiency of the EGT is found in a simple manner. A systematic methodology for the efficiency analysis of one and two degree-of-freedom (DOF) EGTs is described, and 14 ready-to-use efficiency formulas are derived for 2DOF gear pair entities (GPEs). This paper includes also a discussion on the redundancy of the efficiency formulas used for 1DOF GPEs. An incomplete in the efficiency formulas in previous literature, which make them susceptible to wrong application, is brought to light. © 2016 by ASME.

Experimental work was carried out to develop information about the properties of glass aggregate concrete reinforced with chopped basalt fibre. Recycled waste mixed colour glass was used as a partial replacement (20%, 40%, and 60% by weight) for the natural fine aggregate with different volume fractions of fibre (0%, 0.1%, 0.3%, and 0.5% by total mix volume). The combined effect of the glass and the basalt fibre on the mechanical properties of the fresh and hardened concrete was investigated. The heat transfer through the thickness for this type of concrete was also investigated. A statistical analysis was also carried out to investigate the variance of the data for each mix. The test results and the statistical analysis indicated that there is a slight reduction in the compressive and splitting tensile strength with the increase in the glass content above 20%. Using basalt fibre leads to an enhancement in it for all mixes and there is an optimum content of fibre in each percentage of glass sand which gives higher strength. A slight decrease in the heat transfer through the concrete specimens was also observed. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd.

Planetary gear trains (PGTs) are introduced to undergraduate mechanical engineering students in the course of Theory of Machines. The complexity of the traditional methods for analyzing PGTs has kept many from becoming familiar with the capability of PGTs in mechanisms and machine design. In this paper a unified general formulation for simultaneously visualizing velocities, torques, and power flow through a train is presented on a single nomograph. Therefore, the increasing complex mechanical systems, such as automotive transmissions, are much easier to understand. Nomographs of Fundamental Gear Entities (FGEs) are constructed based on the nomographs of their fundamental circuits, without specifying the exact gear dimensions. They are then unified in one system nomograph. Nomographs are promising to provide designers with an efficient tool for the design of geared mechanisms. © 2013 Essam Lauibi Esmail.

Although there are many epicyclic-type automatic transmissions in production, the related configuration design methods are still tedious and borne to human error. A simple methodology for the systematic design of the Ravigneaux-type epicyclic gear transmissions needs to be developed. First, fundamentals and gear-shifting of four-speed and six-speed epicyclic-type automatic transmissions are illustrated to establish the design requirements. Second, based on the kinematic nomographs of the corresponding basic gear ratios, a simple clutching-sequence method is proposed and illustrated. Next, a planar-graph representation is presented to arrange the desired clutches for each possible clutching sequence into the epicyclic gear mechanism. Then, with the above methods, the systematic designs of the epicyclic gear mechanisms are given for demonstrating the feasibility of the proposed methodology. The result of this work shows that the seven-, eight-, and nine-link two-DOF Ravigneaux-type epicyclic gear mechanisms could reach four-, six-, and eight-forward speeds at most, respectively. New five-, six-, seven-, and eight-velocity automatic transmissions are enumerated from the two-ring eight- and nine-link Ravigneaux gear mechanisms. It is a major breakthrough to design completely satisfactory eight-speed automatic transmissions from the nine-link Ravigneaux gear mechanism. © 2013 Essam L. Esmail.
