A mobile ad hoc network (MANET) is a wireless network without the support of any fixed infrastructure. Security is one of the main challenges in ad hoc network due to dynamic topology and mobility of nodes. Clustering is one of the main techniques that are used to increase the scalability of MANETs, but without any security considerations clustering is prone to various security attacks. Some cryptographic-based schemes have been proposed to secure the clustering process, but they are unable to handle the internal attacks. To defend against insider malicious nodes, trust and reputation management systems should be used. This work proposes a trust based clustering algorithm which forms a cluster around the trustworthy nodes. The Criteria used to select the CH is the trust value of a node. Our algorithm gives major improvements regarding the number and the trust value of elected cluster heads. Analysis and simulation results are used to show the performance of our algorithm, compared with other clustering algorithms in literature. © 2005 - 2015 JATIT & LLS. All rights reserved.
