In this short note we address the paper (Vogt in J Math Chem 51:2257–2263, 2013) where Vogt claimed to have found errors and inconsistencies in Dell’Acqua and Bersani (J Math Chem 50:1136–1148, 2012). The goal of this study was to investigate the differences in physical fitness in relation to urban or rural living environment and between two countries: Italy and Croatia. Over 14,000 students were tested during physical education (PE) lessons. Croatian students were taller and heavier than Italian students, with women achieving better results in flexibility. Urban students were fitter in abdominal strength than rural students. Age seemed to be the major factor influencing the performance. This study's results indicate a trend: urban students performed “indoor” tests better than rural students; the opposite may be true for rural students. Living environment, socio-economic-status, or cultural correlation differences could be decreased during school experiences. Thus, PE programs could train all people toward an adequate, age-based fitness level. © Perceptual & Motor Skills 2015. Source

Geodatabases for coastal analysis, sustainability and open source geospatial analysis must be included in innovative educational programs in the field of GeoIntelligence applications. Open source is a development method for software that harnesses the power of the distributed peer-review process. Open source promises more reliable research, greater flexibility, lower cost and an end to predatory vendor lock-in. The open source initiative (OSI) is a non-profit-making corporation formed to educate on the benefits of open source and to form connections between different constituencies in the open source community. Activities for high schools and postgraduate courses will include the phases such as analysis of the project GIS, analysis of OS technologies with RS analysis, and a case study with the support of internet research. The spatial pattern of long-term rates used for coastal management is quite different from the most recent short-term rates, indicating a need for continuous monitoring. Source

Environmental researchers have been making efforts to monitor, simulate and control water quality parameters for more than two decades. The research project involved the use of environmental models for research and decision support. This included blue infrastructure visualization, viewshed creation and watershed studies for sustainable development under open source geospatial analysis. The use of Open Source Free Software GIS was promoted. Temporal and spatial resolution requirements for extracting blue infrastructures and ecological effects of pollution from remote sensor data were analyzed. The goal is to relate the user information requirements with the current and proposed remote sensing systems to determine if there are substantive gaps in capability. The analysis included the determination of the optical properties of some water quality parameters and the development of spectral indices using hyperspectral airborne data for the shallower blue infrastructures in the Etna Park and in Grado the transfer of these spectral indices to the larger and deeper blue infrastructures in Catania and Trieste Province. Italy is a densely populated country, where most of the land is actively used by its human population. As a result, many of the remaining natural areas are subject to different typologies of human pressures that generally cause habitat fragmentation. Habitat fragmentation, unanimously considered as one of the greatest threats to biodiversity conservation, is due to a variety of factors related to land use changes, such as urban sprawl, increasing of transport infrastructures, and the intensification of agriculture and forestry practices. The main purpose of this paper was to investigate levels of natural habitat fragmentation due to the presence of human settlements in the Italian National Parks through the use of the Urban Fragmentation Index (UFI). All the results were recorded in a GIS database (Geographic Information System), elaborating a new method for a comparative spatial analysis of these records in order to achieve a critical scale of the habitat fragmentation levels in each of the 24 Italian National Parks. The results represent an important indicator for the prioritization of biodiversity conservation interventions in the Italian National Parks. Copyright © 2013, AIDIC Servizi S.r.l. Source
