The simultaneous α-iodination and Nβ-arylation mechanism of 5-alkyloxy-4-phenylamino-2(5H)-furanone by (diacetoxyiodo) benzene was investigated by means of density functional theory (DFT) with B3LYP/6-31G∗//LANL2DZ, selecting 4-(diphenylamino)-5-methyloxy-3-iodo-2(5H)-furanone as the calculation model. In addition, the effect of solvent on the reaction pathway was investigated using the Polarisable Continuum Model (PCM). Good agreement was found between the computational and the experimental results. Furthermore, single crystals of 4-(diphenylamino)-5-ethoxy-3-iodo-2 (5H)-furanone were grown by slow evaporation technique. The molecular structure analysis was performed by single crystal X-ray analysis and theoretical calculations using a semi-empirical quantum chemical method and DFT/B3LYP methods with a LANL2DZ as basis set. © CSIRO 2017.

As a kind of α,β-unsaturated butyrolactone, 2(5H)-furanone is so reactive in lots of reactions that it has been used extensively in organic synthesis, especially, when a halogen atom is attached to the C=C unsaturated bond. According to the different reaction points, the recent advance in reactions of 2(5//)-furanone with nucleophiles containing nitrogen to give cyclic derivatives with β-substituent, α,β-disubstituents or γ-substituent via Michael addition, tandem Michael addition-elimination, dipolar cycloaddition or palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions is reviewed.

Abstract Three cobalt coordination polymers, namely {[Co(4-pmntd)2(CF3SO3)(H2O)]·(CF3SO3)·(C2H5OH)·0.5(HCCl3)·H2O} n (1), {[Co(4-pmntd)(H2O)4]·(NO3)2·H2O} n (2), and {[Co(4-pmntd)(pta)(CH3OH)2]·2(CHCl3)} n (3) (4-pmntd = N,N′-bis(4-pyridylmethyl)-naphthalene diimide; pta = terephthalate), have been synthesized by reactions of 4-pmntd with Co(CF3SO3)2·4H2O, Co(NO3)2·6H2O, and Co(pta), respectively. The complexes have been characterized by elemental analyses, powder X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analyses, IR spectroscopy, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. In complex 1, the ligand adopts U-mode, resulting in a dumbbell-like 2D (4, 4)-sql net structure in a non-interpenetrating edge-to-edge arrangement. The Z-mode ligand arrangement leads to 1D zigzag chains for complex 2, and a 2D twofold interpenetrating bat-like (4, 4)-sql net for complex 3. A solution of complex 2 in DMF showed a change in color and remarkably enhanced fluorescence upon the addition of two equivalents of acetate, whereas other anions did not induce a color change. Hence, complex 2 can act as a highly promising acetate-detecting reagent. Their thermal and the gas adsorption properties of complexes 1 and 3 were investigated. © 2015 Springer International Publishing Switzerland.

Monodisperse and nearly stoichiometric quaternary Cu 2ZnSnS 4 (CZTS) nanoparticles were synthesized using a low-cost and high reproducibility method without vacuum system or protective atmosphere. The reaction vessel is a stainless steel autoclave with a Teflon liner under magnetic stirring. The structure, stoichiometric composition and morphology of the as-synthesized CZTS nanoparticles were characterized by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectra (EDS), scanning electronic microscope (SEM) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM). All the above confirmed the purity and composition of CZTS nanoparticles. UV-vis absorption spectroscopy measurement indicated that the band gap of as-synthesized CZTS nanoparticles was 1.54 eV, which was near the optimum value for photovoltaic solar conversion in a single-band-gap device.© 2012 Elsevier B.V. Uniform MoS2 nanosheets/C hybrid microspheres with mean diameter of 320 nm have been successfully synthesized via a facile one-pot hydrothermal route by sodium molybdate reacting with sulfocarbamide in d-glucose solutions. The products were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX). XRD patterns showed that the MoS2 was kept as a two-dimensional nanosheet crystal and C was retained as amorphous even after their annealing treatment at 800 °C. TEM and SEM images indicated that the MoS2 nanosheets were uniformly dispersed in the amorphous carbon. The experiment results also revealed that the appropriate amount of d-glucose had an obvious effect on the formation of uniform MoS2 nanosheets/C hybrid microspheres. For improving the therapeutic efficiency of tumors and decreasing undesirable side effects, ternary complexes were developed by coating pH-sensitive PEG-b-PLL-g-succinylsulfathiazole (hereafter abbreviated as PPSD) with DNA/PEI polyplexes via electrostatic interaction. PPSD'can efficiently shield the surface charge of DNA/PEI. The gene transfection efficiency of ternary complexes was lower than that of DNA/PEI at pH 7.4; however, it recovered to the same level as that of DNA/PEI at pH 6.0, attributed to the pH-triggered release of DNA/PEI from ternary complexes. Cell uptake results also exhibited the same trend as transfection at different pH values. The suitable ability for pH-triggered shielding/deshielding estimated that PPSD demonstrates potential as a shielding system for use in in vivo gene delivery. © 2016 by the authors.

Cationic gene vectors increased attractive for gene therapy. However, unstable systemic circulation due to the interaction of gene delivery system with blood cells limited the further application. Therefore, pH sensitive shielding systems were exploited, by which, the positive surface charge density of polyplexes was reduced, circulation time was improved and pH-triggered targeting delivery was promised. This mini review mainly focuses on the development of solid tumors pH environment activated shielding systems for cationic gene vectors. This shielding strategy shows great potential for enhancing efficient gene transporting and achieving better therapeutic effects in acidic tumor treatment. © 2016 Bentham Science Publishers.

Ti-Al-N coatings were deposited on Si (1 1 1) and WC substrates by combined cathodic arc middle-frequency magnetron (MF) sputtering under a Ti arc power of 10 kW and with different Al MF targets currents. X-ray diffraction patterns (XRD) showed that the Ti-Al-N coatings were polycrystallize with a preferred (1 1 1) orientation at 2θ = 43.7°. The (1 1 1) diffraction showed a decrease in peak intensity but a increase in FWHM values with the increasing of Al contents. Nano-meter sized TiN crystal grains distinguished by the lattice fringe contrast were verified by plan-view transmission electron (TEM) and selected area electron diffraction (SAED) images. With the increasing of MF sputter currents from 5 to 20 A, the Al contents in the Ti-Al-N coatings monotonically increased from 4.8 to 10.8 at.%, whereas the N and O contents were nearly constant. The hardness of the Ti-Al-N coatings was in the range of 23-32 GPa, and the Young modulus values were in the range of 420-540 GPa. © 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Room temperature ferromagnetism was observed in (Li, Co) co-implanted ZnO films. The implantation energy for Co ions was 400 keV, while for Li ions were 50, 100 and 200 keV, respectively. The ion implantation induced defects and disorder has been observed by the XRD, PL and TEM experiments. For the co-implanted ZnO films with Li ion implantation energies of 100 and 200 keV, the band energy emission disappears and the defect related emission with wavelength of 500-700 nm dominates, which can be attributed to defects introduced by implantation. Co-implanted ZnO Films with Li ion implantation energies of 200 keV show a saturation magnetization value (MS) of over 9 × 10-5 emu and a positive coercive field of 60 Oe. The carrier concentration is not much improved after annealing and in the order of 10 16 cm-3, which suggests that FM does not depend upon the presence of a significant carrier concentration. The origin of ferromagnetism behavior can be explained on the basis of electrons and defects that form bound magnetic polarons, which overlap to create a spin-split impurity band. © 2010 Elsevier B.V. Five unprotected α-amino acids, serving as nucleophiles, were reacted with different (5S)-5-alkoxy-3,4-dihalo-5H-furan-2-ones via tandem Michael addition-elimination to give 15 new optically active 5H-furan-2-one derivatives. The chemical structures and absolute configurations of these compounds with multiple chiral centers were confirmed via rotation, UV-Vis, IR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, MS, elemental analysis and X-ray single crystal diffraction.
