This article reports the synthesis of nanocrystalline (nc) Fe20Ni80 particles with tunable shape, using a heterogeneous directing agent-free aqueous wet chemical method of mild synthesis conditions. The particle morphology has been controlled by varying synthesis conditions. The results demonstrate that the morphology of alloy particles changes from quasi-isotropic to anisotropic architecture by decreasing concentration of metal ions or increasing pH of reaction solution. Deep interpretations of such phenomena are reported. Magnetic behavior of the alloy is driven away from soft magnetic and toward hard magnetic behavior, by anisotropy and size reduction of alloy particles. This broadens practical applications of nc Fe20Ni80 alloy. Overall, the study provides an effective economical way for high-yield synthesis of nc Fe-Ni particles with tailored shape and subsequently magnetic properties for a specific technological application. Additionally, it adds a new morphology, highly branched wires, of distinctive magnetic behavior to the known morphologies of nc Fe-Ni particles. © 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Artichoke can be eaten as a fresh, canned or frozen vegetable for its health benefits due to the high content of polyphenols. The aim of this study is to elucidate the chemical composition, antioxidant and antimicrobial activity of globe artichoke (Cynara cardunculus L) and baby anzio artichoke (Cyrnara scolymus). The results of this investigation revealed that, the globe artichoke showed a moisture, protein and carbohydrate content higher than baby anzio. On the other hand the baby anzio showed a lipid content higher than globe artichoke. Baby anzio extract showed a higher phenolic compounds than glob artichoke extract. The baby anzio methanol extract showed the antioxidant activity higher than globe artichoke (IC50 of baby anzio extract lower that IC50 of globe artichoke extract). At the same time the baby anizio extract exhibited more toxicity and inhibition zone diameter against 5 pathogenic bacterial strains than globe artichoke extract. This study confirmed that the two varieties of artichoke exhibited moderate functional properties like antioxidant and antimicrobial activity. Subsequently, baby anzio artichoke is more effective and powerful in antioxidant and antimicrobial activity. © Sobhy A. El Sohaimy; Licensee Bentham Open.

The date (Phoenix dactylifera L.), a high-energy fruit, is regarded as a popular food commodity for thousands of years in Egypt, the Arabian Gulf peninsula and its neighboring region. The aim of present study is to characterize the biochemical and nutritional values of constituents of the Egyptian date fruits. Date palm fruits contain a variety of B-complex vitamins B1, B2, Nicotinic acid and vitamin A. the date palm extracts contains 13.80 % moisture and 86.50 % total solid. Ash and Crud fibers contents were 2.13 and 5.20 respectively. Protein, carbohydrates and lipids contents were 3.00%, 73.00% and 2.90 % respectively. The low level of lipids content 2.90% compared with its content of sugars means that, the date palm is save to heart and blood patients because its containing a very low level of fatty acids and cholesterol. HPLC analysis of sugars content showed that, the carbohydrate content consists of a large amount of glucose, fructose and sucrose, The protein pattern on SDS-PAGE showed that, most of proteins in the date palm are a high molecular weight proteins between 80 and 135 KD and contained a minimum levels of the LMW proteins less than 55 KD. Date Palm contained high concentration of Aspartic acid, Proline, Glycine, Histidine, Valine, Leucine and Arginine, but low concentration of Threonine, Serine, Methionine, Isoleucine, Tyrosine, Phenylalanine and Lysine and very low concentration of Alanine. The date palm fruits provide unique functional and nutritional values. Numerous health benefits beyond its nutritional value have been associated with consuming date palm fruits to enrich nutrition values of different kinds of food. © 2010, INSInet Publication.

Streptokinase (SK) is a therapeutically important thrombolytic agent. Cardiovascular disease is the first cause of adult death worldwide. In Egypt about 13% of the population die every year due to ischemic heart disease. In spite of this fact, there is no local production of cardiovascular therapeutics. We reported for the first time the expression of a recombinant SK from a local Streptococcus strain. When produced on industrial scale this r-SK may substantially contribute to reducing the costs of thrombolytic therapy in developing countries. In this study, a highly purified r-SK from Streptococcus sp. isolated from Egyptian pharyngitis patients was obtained. The isolated strain was partially identified using 16S rDNA sequencing and named Streptococcus sp. SalMarEg. It was found to be phylogenetically related to Streptococcus pyogenes. Analysis of the obtained sequence showed high similarity with other SK genes. The protein expression in a prokaryotic system obtained a 47-kDa SK protein that could be purified using a single-step his-tagged affinity purification chromatography, with nearly 80% recovery. The clot lytic activities of both recombinant and commercial SK were similar, thus giving the basis to scale up this SK product in order to evaluate the possibilities of its commercialization in local and/or regional markets. © 2011 Academic Journals.

Surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) was used to investigate the structure of self-assembled monolayers of 2-mercaptopyridine (2Mpy) adsorbed on the surface of a roughened polycrystalline gold electrode from either water or 0.1 M aqueous H 2SO 4 at different electrode potential values in 0.5 M aqueous H 2SO 4. A band in the range 215 to 245 cm -1 assigned to a gold-sulfur stretching mode indicates formation of a sulfur-bonded adsorbate of 2Mpy. There is also evidence that 2Mpy is bonded through the nitrogen atom of the pyridine ring forming a chelate-like structure. Results suggest a perpendicular orientation of 2Mpy on the gold surface. © 2012 Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.
