The purpose of the paper was to improve the system of sheep oocytes assessment used for IVM protocol. The research was carried out on a total of 43 oocytes collected by follicle aspiration method. The morphological evaluation of the oocytes was performed using an inverted Nikon microscope. Morphometric analysis was performed with the Motic Image Plus software, taking into study oocyte diameter, cumulus dimension, thickness of the pellucida zone. According to the morphological characteristics collected oocytes were included in two quality categories: cultivable (69.77%) and non-cultivable oocytes (30.23%). Morphometric analysis led to the classification of oocytes in four quality classes: class I (44.19%), class II (18.60%), class III (16.28%), class IV (20.93%). Results obtained at morphological and morphometric examination allowed us to develop a more accurate and objective classification of sheep oocytes, which will lead to their rigorous selection for in vitro maturation use. © The Romanian Society for Cell Biology.
