Aim: The aim of this investigation was to determine frequency of urinary incontinence among the women attending outpatient clinics of gynaecology of Kayseri Education and Research Hospital and to investigate the impacts of some socio demographic and medical factors. Material and Methods: The study was performed on the patients who attended outpatient clinics of gynaecology in 2007. A questionnaire including 45 questions was applied. A total of 775 questionnaires were evaluated. Chi square test and logistic regression method were used for statistical analyses. Results: Frequency of urinary incontinence was found 36.6 percent. Of the study group, 33.5 percent had stress urinary incontinence and 26.8 percent had urge urinary incontinence. It was found out that frequency of stress urinary incontinence and urge urinary incontinence increased by age. The age 40 and over, to be housewife, smoking, and genital prolapsus were found as significant risk factors for both stress urinary incontinence and urge urinary incontinence. Conclusion: It was concluded that approximately one third of the study group have urinary incontinence. Various socio demographic and medical factors may affect frequency of urinary incontinence. Preventive measures should be performed in order to prevent urinary incontinence and the incontinent women should be encouraged to consult physician.

Purpose: Allergy for latex has an increasing importance in the recent years, according to its being an occupational disease of healthcare people. Our aim in this study is to determine the prevalence of latex allergy in healthcare employees. Materials and Methods: This research is done among physicians and nurses working in Akdeniz University Hospital. Interviews were conducted face-to-face with participants in the house by pollsters that had been educated before. Data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences - SPSS 14.0 program. Results: In this study, 276 volunteer were surveyed. The mean age and year of tenure of participants were detected as 30.5±7 and 6.9±6.8 respectively. The sixty-seven percent of the participants were female and 64.5% were medical doctor. Latex sensitivity was determined in 18.1% of all. Then the ratios were compared between the nurses and physicians. It was found that latex sensitivity was higher in nurses and also significantly higher in the people with food allergy, drug allergy and with who has a family history of being atopic, smoking, having allergic rhino-conjunctivitis and urticeria. Also, the sensitivity to gloves and flusters that are containing latex was found higher. Conclusion: Latex allergy is an important health problem since 1980s. Latex sensitivity was found as 18,1% in our study. After the surveys physicians and nurses were informed about latex containing products and what to do as prevention to latex allergy.

Purpose: We present long-term surgical experience of 102 chordee without hypospadias cases. Materials and Methods: This retrospective study included 102 chordee without hypospadias cases who were surgically treated between 1999 and 2012. Range of patients' age was from 1 month to 31 years. Seventy-two patients were adult, and 30 were children. Mean duration of follow up was 49.3 months. The patients were categorized into 4 groups including skin tethering (group 1), fibrotic dartos and Buck's fasciae (group 2), corporeal disproportion (group 3) and urethral tethering (group 4) with the aid of intraoperative artificial erection, according to the structural defect. Results: Forty patients (group 1) were successfully treated with penile degloving. Except 3 (10%) of 31 (group 2) cases, extensive resection of the fibrotic dartos and Buck's fascia was needed to straighten the penis. Corporeal disproportion was identified in 27 patients of whom 2 cases (7%) had complications. One of them developed urethrocutaneous fistula, and he was treated with buccal mucosal graft urethroplasty successfully. In other one, chordee persisted after two years, and we had to do Nesbit wedge resection after tunica albuginea plication to achieve penile straightening at the same session; otherwise we avoid tunica albuginea excision or incision. Overall 96 (94%) of 102 patients were successfully treated at first operation. Conclusion: We concluded that tunica albuginea plication is very effective for both prepubertal and postpubertal period and also in management of recurrence. We believe that, in experienced hands, early surgical correction can be done successfully in this condition.

Objective: The aim of the study was to assess the prevalence of mood and anxiety disorders among inpatients and the relationship between sociodemographic factors, medical illnesses and treatments. Methods: In the present study, we selected 650 inpatients from all clinics except psychiatry and pediatrics in a general hospital by a simple random sampling method. Based on the exclusion criteria, 57 patients were excluded. Mood and anxiety disorders were determined by means of the Structured Clinical Interview for Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition. Results: Of the participants, 226 (37.5%) had a psychiatric disorder, 87 (14.4) had a mood disorder and 146 (24.2%) had an anxiety disorder. The most common specific diagnoses were not otherwise specified as anxiety disorder (9.5%), major depression (8.6%) and generalized anxiety disorder (7.6%). While the overall prevalence was highest in the hematology clinic (60.0%), it was lowest in the clinic of infectious diseases (22.7%). Logistic regression analysis indicated that the independent factors associated with psychiatric disorders were being of the female gender and a personal history of psychiatric disorders. Conclusions: In conclusion, results of the present study suggest that mood and anxiety disorders were frequently observed among inpatients, particularly in female patients and those with an individual history of psychiatric disorder. Successful treatment of these disorders may positively contribute to the course of the disease in inpatients. However, this assumption should be confirmed by further studies. © 2013 Elsevier Inc.

Echocardiography | Year: 2013

Aims In individuals who exercise regularly and for extended periods of time, some structural alterations in the heart, called the athlete's heart, develop in time. These alterations vary in type, can be eccentric or concentric, depending on the nature of exercise. Speckle tracking echocardiography (STE) is a novel, angle-independent method that accurately and reliably measures systolic and diastolic functions of the left ventricle (LV) with considerably lower inter-operator variability. Methods and Results Twenty-two marathon runners, 24 wrestlers, and 20 healthy sedentary individuals were included in the study. The average age of subjects is 17.5 ± 2.2 in marathon runners, 16.8 ± 1.9 in wrestlers, and 16.4 ± 1.8 in control group. The parameters of LV longitudinal strain (S), LV longitudinal strain rate systolic (SRS), LV longitudinal strain rate diastolic early filling (SRE), and longitudinal strain rate diastolic late filling (SRA) were evaluated by apical two-, three-, and four-chamber grayscale imaging using the global longitudinal strain (GLS) and GLS rate (GLSR). Conventional echocardiographic parameters demonstrated increased LV diameters and wall thickness in the marathon runners and increased wall thickness without increased LV diameters in the wrestlers. Systolic and diastolic functions were comparable between the marathon runners and wrestlers with conventional echocardiography. Analysis with STE, however, yielded higher systolic strain and strain rates in the athletes. Normalized GLS parameters and end-diastolic volume (EDV) were shown to be correlated. Conclusion Overall, conventional echocardiography can detect some differences between young athletes with eccentric and concentric type of athlete's heart but it is incapable of revealing differences in intrinsic myocardial functions. However, analysis using STE demonstrated increased systolic functions in athletes commensurate with increased load, with unaltered diastolic functions. © 2013, Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
