Near Infra Red Spectroscopy is now a well established technology for the indirect measurement of Hydrocarbon streams composition and properties. From the earlier works and patents in late 80's, several industrial applications have been derived and implemented, mostly in the Refining area but also in Steam Cracking plants. Here, it allowed implementing a full feed forward and predictive control of the furnaces using real time NIR analysers for the liquid feeds, whilst GC analysers didn't provide such accurate and fast response time analysis. Recently, new published works showed the growing interest of this technology applied to Olefins plants.

Here, it allowed implementing a full feed forward and predictive control of the furnaces using real time NIR analysers for the liquid feeds, whilst GC analysers didn't provide such accurate and fast response time analysis. Recently, new published works showed the growing interest of this technology applied to Olefins plants. At Lavera, the Steam Cracker of Naphtachimie (a 50/50 subsidiary of Ineos Olefins and Total Petrochemicals) is the first one over the world equipped with an on-line TOPNIR™ analysis of naphtha feedstock. The 26 furnaces of the plant produce more than 740,000 tpa of ethylene. The naphtha represents between 70 and 95% of the whole feedstock of the plant. Between 1991 and 2003, these furnaces were controlled by an in-house on-line process control model which was using 13 naphtha properties provided from TOPNIR™ on-line analyser to adjust in real time the furnaces operating conditions. Since 2003, a new process control scheme, including SPYRO® and a full on-line optimiser, has been installed and is using also the TOPNIR™ analysis results to control and optimise the whole plant. Topnir Solutions for Ethylene plants are installed worldwide, for instance in Braskem, Brazil or in Petrochina Dushanzi, China, our last installation. Thanks to the high level of accuracy of TOPNIR™ analysis feeding Process Control system and Optimizer, the optimisation of Steam Cracker operations allows a substantial induced benefit in the range of 1-2 M$/year.

A number of experts associated with the manufacturing have shared their views on cracker optimization through online analysis and rigorous kinetic models. The determination of product properties from the near-infrared (NIR) spectra requires models to quantify the relationships between these spectra and the properties gathered in a databank. Online analysis allows users to update the model by adding new samples into the reference databank. This update is automatic after the introduction of a new sample in the calibration database. Tonir is one of the simplest learning methods that involves simple sample addition to the database avoiding the necessity of remodeling. The online optimizer gathers 48 rigorous thermodynamic and mass balance sub models optimizing 110 variables by using 4.000 DCS tags and 3.300 limits or constraints.

The Topnir FCC application by Topnir™ is aimed at providing results to the FCC unit process control within 30 minutes in order to reduce turnaround in optimization operation. The Topnir model predicts a vector of chemical properties such as Conradson carbon, aromatic content, distillation, total ammonia nitrogen (TAN), sulfur, basic nitrogen, density and viscosity at 100°C. Topnir is a chemometric software that exploits the NIR spectra in order to determine a full vector of properties attached to the hydrocarbon products. The key feature of the Topnir technology package is the software required to carry out the analysis. This unique software enables the user to convert the information provided by the analyzer into models that are used for the determination of multiple properties. The system accounts for outliers and does not require any new calibration of the models.
