In order to control the growth of tobacco seedlings and provide seedlings suitable for well-cellar transplanting, a contrast experiment of repeating clipping was carried out. The results showed that tobacco seedlings were more suitable for well-cellar transplanting on the third day after the first clipping (only 1/3 to 1/2 of the area of larger leaves was removed) or the second clipping; the restoring period of the transplanted tobacco plants in field was shorter, the amount of dry matter accumulation in tobacco shoot was larger, the agronomic characters, such as plant height, stalk circumference, length and width of the largest leaf and tip, were better, and single leaf weight, yield, output value, average price and percentage of high and middle grade leaf increased. Furthermore, transplanting on the third day after the first clipping could reduce the cost of seedling culturing obviously. Therefore, it is recommended to practice well-cellar transplanting on the third day after the first clipping in flue-cured tobacco production.

Relationships between humus chemical composition and soil factors in typical tobacco-growing regions were analyzed. Results showed that: (1) carbon content (TC) of soil humus ranged from10 g/kg to 20 g/kg, with average of 15.25 g/kg. Proportions of humic acid (HA), fulvic acid (FA) and humin (HM) in humus carbon content were distributed in 11.05%-32.15%, 12.00%-36.28% and 38.43%-68.23%, respectively. Most of HA/FA ratios ranged from 0.7 to 1.3; (2) TC in tobacco growing regions in southeast China was significantly higher than in other regions, with Huanghuai region was the lowest. The HA/FA ratio of tobacco growing regions in southeast China was significantly higher than in others, with an average value of 1.14, while in other regions it was less than 1; (3) Carbon levels of TC and humus composition in paddy soil were the highest followed by purple, red, and brown soils. The humification degree of paddy soil was also much higher than others; (4) soil pH values were significantly negatively correlated with humus composition. Alkali-hydrolyzable nitrogen content increased with decreasing soil FA/TC, or increasing HA/FA.
