Out of 100 μl of capillary blood of 28 ensigns of the Theresianische Militärakademie ionized Mg, ionized potassium, pH and basexcess, pCO 2 and HCO3 was determined with a CCX device (NOVA Biomedical) and CSASoftware (PLK, Judendorf - Strassengel, AUSTRIA). 14 ensigns had to perform a military steeplechase (obstacle race), already partly reported earlier [1], the other 14 participants absolved a combined sports activity consisting of running and swimming contests. Blood sampling and determination was done before and after the performance in both groups. Also both groups showed a highly significant negative correlation between pH and Kbefore sports, while at the same time pH/Mg correlation were positive before steeplechase and negative before combined sports. Negative pH/Mg correlations are mostly consistent with already agitated situations, which, in the case of combined sports was indeed the case because about 30 minutes of shivering due to a sharp fall in temperature was evident. Correlations with K and awarded scores showed that in the shivering group the participants with relatively highest K and lowest pH basally had the best chances for high scoring, while in the much less agitated first group the reaction was opposite. Thus, by correlative characterizing basal situations appropriate steps can be taken in time. The same correlation characterizes the ranking of each single participant within the peculiar situation of the group. This ranking seems to be connected with their chances of scoring in the subsequent sports. Moreover, possible outliers can be identified before performance or deployment. ©2010 Dustri-Verlag Dr. K. Out of about 100 μl of capillary blood of both normotonic (n = 32) and hypertonic (n = 55, RR > 140/100) Type 2 diabetics, the following parameters have been determined as part of a glucose profile at 9.00 a.m. and 12.00 a.m.: Mg, Ca, Ca/Mg Quotient, K and Na, pH, pCO 2, HCO 3, base excess and blood glucose. The normotonic and hypertonic group were compared with a normoglycemic, age-matched group from our data banks. Evaluation of the gathered parameters has been done in three steps: 1. determination of group averages and significance analyzes of the differences, 2. correlation analyzes between the determine parameters at both sampling times and 3. correlation of the parameter changes between sampling time 1 and 2. Evaluation of the group averages shows clear and significant diminishment of buffer capacities and electrolytes of the normotonic diabetics compared with the normoglycemic, age-matched group, but there were no differences in group averages detectable between the diabetic groups with different blood pressures. However, correlation analyzes at the first sampling time revealed, that parameters of normotonic diabetics interacted in a very different way from those in the age matched group and those of the hypertonic diabetics, which hardly correlated at all.Acorrelative comparison of parameter changes between first and second sampling did show however, that only in hypertonic diabetics H and K ions, as well as K and Mg ions correlated significantly positively. Furthermore it could be shown by other significant correlations, that behind the seemingly similarity of the group averages of normotonic and hypertonic diabetics a metabolic increase was hidden which went far beyond the already increased metabolism of the normotonic diabetics. It led to an even more expressed electrolyte depletion via increased acidity and increased blood glucose as experienced by normotonic diabetics. More detailed correlative analyzed are obviously able to reveal different metabolic reactions hidden behind otherwise identical group averages and quantify them. © 2010 Dustri-Verlag Dr. Karl Feistle.

Before and after a trial run for the selection of participants in a patrolrun competition, capillary blood samples of about 100 microliters were taken from the fingertips of 18 male participants from which pH, Mg ++, Ca++ lactate and blood glucose were determined with a Phox - M analyzer of the NOVA Biomedical corporation. Comparatively low average Mg values before the trial run became even lower after the contest. A correlation of the individual Ca/Mg quotients in the blood before the run with the recorded running times afterwards showed a significant positive correlation, meaning that participants with low Ca/Mg quotients before the contest had the best chances for high scoring. This was underlined by a highly significant polynomial graph of the delta values of the quotient (Ca/Mg before - Ca/Mg after contest), with a nadir close to the shortest running times. Similar to our findings at the occasion of a short but intensive obstacle run [1] it turned out, that those contestants with the least trial - induced differences in their Ca/Mg turnover have the best chances for high scoring. Thus it seems possible, that either Mg or Ca/Mg quotient changes could be generally used as prognostic and diagnostic instruments in sportive contests. ©2012 Dustri-Verlag Dr. K. Feistle.

Mg++ blood concentrations were determined before and after a standard exercise of 80 watts and 8 minutes from 306, mainly male probands, which were subdivided into three groups: Group 1 consisted of probands with Mg++ concentrations of 0.45 mM/l and lower, Group 2 of those with Mg++ concentrations between 0.45 mM/l and 0.5 mM/l and Group 3 of probands with Mg values above 0.5 mM Mg/l. It turned out that in groups with lower Mg++ concentrations there was also a higher blood glucose, higher lactate, lower pH and lower buffer capacity, sometimes even before exercise. If hypomagnesemia is to be defined by concomitant worsening of the metabolism, the so called hypomagnesiemic threshold should be increased from 0.45 mM/l to 0.5 mM/l, nearly a third of the physiological range. ©2012 Dustri-Verlag Dr. K. Before and after a session of the district council in the village of Mellach, capillary blood samples of ∼ 100 ml were taken from the fingertips of 2 female and 11 male counselors from which pH, pCO2, BE, Mg++, K++, lactate and blood glucose were determined with a Phox - M analyzer of the NOVA Biomedical corporation. Group averages already revealed altogether very low Mg++ and high blood glucose levels. Correlations between pCO2 and pH, pH and K or Mg++ showed similar anticipatory reactions as in sportive competitors, with similarly immanent possibilities of prognoses of efforts during the proper session. It turned out, that those counselors who were the most excited beforehand were also those with the most pronounced reactions to the session which underlines our earlier findings about additive secretion of adrenaline [5, 6]. In all counselors a mostly more- sometimes less pronounced overcompensation of acidic metabolites by CO2 loss during the session led to alkaline pH. Alkaline pH in its turn is better able to bind O 2and also Mg++. We hypothesized, that low Mg++ levels during increased metabolic activity by mental stress may at least partly be due to the increased binding capacity of the alkaline blood. Taken all together, the results show that considerable and predictable metabolic activities brought about by repeated mental stress on top of the daily worries could at least partly explain the unsatisfactory glucose and Mg++ situation of the village politicians. ©2012 Dustri-Verlag Dr. K. Ionized Mg, pH, pCO2 , HCO3 , base excess, blood glucose, and lactate were determined, and free fatty acids were estimated in 100 μL of capillary blood of 15 officer trainees in the evening of the consecutive day after a sleepless night. It turned out that the metabolism of the fatigued subjects was unexpectedly high, which e.g. was reflected in considerable CO2 loss and additional HCO3 diminishment along with an over-compensatory increase of pH. Blood glucose diminished with increasing individual fatigue, and estimated free fatty acids increased proportionally. All those metabolic changes were proportional to individual Mg loss from the blood. It seems probable that Mg diminishment brought about by an elevated metabolism increased the effort needed to overcome fatigue. The results may trigger investigations as to the usefulness of sugar-free, magnesium-free caffeine drinks for tired persons. © 2016 Dustri-Verlag Dr. K. Feistle ISSN 0946-2104.

From 50 in-patients of a rehabilitation clinic in Kärnten/Austria, the so called whole blood (wb) magnesium as well as ionized magnesium and hematocrit (hct) was determined. It turned out that the wb magnesium values did not correlate in any way with the ionized magnesium concentrations. When, however, the wb Mg values were corrected with hct, a highly significant linear regression between hct corrected wb magnesium and ionized Mg ensued. The correlation became even better when only Mg values above the hypomagnesemic threshold of 0.5 mM/L ionized Mg were included. Thus a reliable standard curve within the normal range of ionized Mg could be established with the wb Mg values. Out of 100 microliters of capillary blood of 32 normotonic and 55 hypertonic (RR at least 140/100) diabetic patients, the following parameters were determined at 09:00 a.m.: pH, pCO2, baseexcess, HCO3, pO2, O2sat., Na, Ca, Mg, K, lactate and blood glucose. Group averages of the normotonic and hypertonic patients did not show any significant differences in the parameters mentioned. But when we split the 2 groups along their glucose averages, forming 4 subgroups with higher and lower glucose levels, significant differences between Mg and K in the respective groups were evident, pointing towards an increase in electrolyte metabolism due to both hyperglycemia and hypertonia. Linear regressions between Mg, glucose and pH within the four groups increased circumstantial evidence for our supposition of increased electrolyte metabolism being attributable to both hyperglycemia and hypertonia, considerably. It turned out that high blood glucose alone already increases electrolyte metabolism, shown by positive correlations with Mg and glucose and negative correlations between Mg and pH which culminates in the highest Mg values along with highest glucose and lowest pH values in patients with combined hyperglycemia and hypertonia. Although we partly drew similar conclusions in a former paper [14], the step forward in the present work is that results won by comparison of parameter changing (delta values) between two sampling events can be confirmed by using the directly determined data of just a single sample. Thus, appropriately processed data and comparatively simple mathematical operations like implementation of linear regressions do not only detect significant differences hidden behind similar group averages, but also considerably curtail the necessary diagnostic blood sampling. ©2011 Dustri-Verlag Dr. K. About 100 μL of capillary blood of 33 staff members of "MEVISTO" corporation, Upper Austria, have been analyzed before and after a 5-minute concentration test (Shapiro test) for ionized magnesium, pH, pCO2, and HCO3. The whole procedure was performed before and after a substitution with 240 mg Mg per day for 30 days. Additionally, a psychological questionnaire to evaluate subjective pain consciousness (SPC) has been used. Already group averages of pH and pCO2, which have been significantly different before substitution due to the mental load of the test turned insignificant afterwards, while Mg and HCO3 did not change at all. More individualistic approaches and correlations between parameters show a significantly calming effect e.g. upon breathing frequency, a significant increase in buffer capacity and a significant decrease of subjective pain consciousness, whereby physiological reactions of the parameters mentioned (Δ-values before and after concentration test), correlate linearly and significantly with psychological reaction data in different ways after substitution. © 2015 Dustri-Verlag Dr. K. Out of 100 μ l of capillary blood of 15 ensigns of the Theresianische Militärakademie, ionized magnesium, ionized potassium, ionized calcium pH, basexcess, pCO2 and HCO3 were determined with a CCX device (NOVA Biomedical, Vienna, Austria) and CSA Software (PLK, Judendorf- Strassengel, Austria), before and after a 2,400-m run, and before and after an 8-week supplementation of 300 mg Magnesium per day. It turned out that neither averages of the ionized Mg levels in blood [5] nor those of the concomitantly determined metabolic parameters changed progressively with the duration of supplementation. However, correlative analyses did show that a progressive amelioration of the efficacy of metabolic reactions went along with advancing substitution time. Born out of significantly increasing metabolic efficacy, roughly three groups of Mg replenishment could be ascertained: Small Mg response along with low metabolic efficiency characterized an un-substituted low Mg state, ample Mg response along with fairly efficient metabolism characterized tolerable Mg replenishment, small Mg response along with highly efficient metabolism stood for an optimal Mg state.
