Provided is a modified diene based polymer in which a diene based polymer is graft modified with a polyether having a mercapto group attached via diurethane bonding. Formation of diurethane bonding is performed by allowing sequential reactions of two species of hydroxyl group-containing compounds with an diisocyanate compound. By adding the modified diene based polymer to a silica-containing rubber composition for automobile pneumatic tires, the dispersibility of silica compounded in the rubber composition can be improved, and a property inherent in silica which simultaneously allows a reduction of rolling resistance and a stability on wet road surfaces can be sufficiently effected.

The relationship between the groove length on the tread surface having a region of groove width and the groove length on the tread surface having a region of groove width satisfies the range of 0.25L2/L10.65. Sipes are provided on the tread surface of the block-like land portions. The respective end portions of the sipes connect to a position where the groove width of the connecting subsidiary grooves changes to the groove width.

A rubber composition includes a sulfur-crosslinkable diene rubber, from 1 to 100 parts by mass of carbon black and/or from 5 to 150 parts by mass of an inorganic filler, from 0.5 to 30 parts by mass of a sulfur-containing compounding agent, and from 0.01 to 20 parts by mass of a phosphine borane compound based on 100 parts by mass of the sulfur-crosslinkable diene rubber. The rubber composition may be applied in at least one type selected from the group consisting of a capped tread, a side wall, a belt, an inner liner, a carcass, and a bead of a pneumatic tire.
