Surgical treatment of pleomorphic adenoma of the parotid gland remains a subject of major debate. The investigators compared postoperative complications and surgical parameters between modified partial superficial parotidectomy and conventional superficial parotidectomy.Clinical records of 129 patients were reviewed and analyzed for clinical characteristics.Compared with the conventional superficial parotidectomy group, the modified partial superficial parotidectomy group had significantly lower rates of auricular numbness, Freys syndrome, and obvious facial asymmetry (all P values <.05). The distance between the primary tumor capsule and satellite nodules ranged from .06 to 8.48 mm, and the greatest distance between the primary tumor capsule and satellite nodules was observed in tumors >4 cm. Furthermore, satellite nodules were more common in tumors >4 cm than in tumors <2 cm or tumors between 2 and 4 cm (all P values <.05).Modified partial superficial parotidectomy compares favorably surgically and clinically with conventional superficial parotidectomy in certain patients.

Background: This study was aimed at investigating the role and molecular mechanism of Sam68 in cervical cancer lymph node metastasis. Materials and methods: Sam68 expression profile was detected by quantitative polymerase chain reaction, western blotting and immunohistochemical staining. Short hairpin RNA interfering approach was employed to suppress endogenous Sam68 expression in cervical cancer cells to determine its role in metastasis and the possible mechanism. Results: Sam68 expression in cervical cancer was significantly up-regulated at both messenger RNA and protein levels compared with that in normal cervical tissues. The high expression level of Sam68 and its cytoplasmic localization were significantly associated with risk factors including pelvic lymph node metastasis (P < 0.001), and served as independent prognostic factors for predicting shortening of the overall survival time and disease-free survival time in patients with early-stage cervical cancer. Moreover, down-regulation of Sam68 in cervical cancer cells remarkably inhibited cellular motility and invasion. In addition, down-regulation of Sam68 reversed epithelial-mesenchymal transition through inhibiting the Akt/ GSK-3β/Snail pathway. Conclusion: This study demonstrated that Sam68 could induce cervical cancer lymph node metastasis through regulating epithelial-mesenchymal transition, and Sam68 expression profile possessed the potential to serve as predictors of pelvic lymph node metastasis in cervical cancer patients. © The Author 2011. Two novel analgesic peptides (Analgesin-HJ, FWPVI-NH2 and Analgesin-HJ(I5T), FWPVT-NH2) were identified from the skin of the tree frog, Hyla japonica. There are 171 amino acid residues in the precursor encoding analgesin-HJs. The precursor contains 10 copies of mature peptide, which include 9 copies of analgesin-HJ and one copy of analgesin-HJ(I5T). Results from analgesic experiments using mice models including abdominal writhing induced by acetic acid, formalin-induced paw licking, and thermal pain test indicated that this two peptides exerted comparable analgesic activities with morphine. In addition, they had ability to inhibit inflammatory factor secretion induced by lipopolysaccharides (LPS). Considering their easy production, storage, transfer and potential analgesic activity, analgesin-HJs might be exciting leading compounds or templates for the development of novel analgesic agent. In addition, this study might facilitate to understand skin defensive mechanism of amphibians.

Enzymes from various natural resources are valuable in management of thrombosis. Blood-sucking arthropods are one of these resources because they have a wide array of anti-hemostasis molecules in their salivary gland. However, it is difficult to purify enough protein samples from the salivary glands for pharmacological studies. In this work, a fibrinogenolytic enzyme (tablysin 2) identified from salivary glands of the horsefly Tabanus yao was expressed in Escherichia coli to further study its biological activities. The primary structure of tablysin 2 showed significant domain similarity to arthropod proteins from the antigen 5 family containing SCP domain, whose biological functions are poorly understood. Tablysin 2 cleaved the A and part of B chains of fibrinogen and did not affect chain and fibrin. It inhibited platelet aggregation induced by ADP. It did not directly induce hemorrhage or activate plasminogen. The fibrinogenolytic activity of tablysin 2 provides a clue for the functions of antigen 5-related proteins in other haematophagous arthropods. This work demonstrate a method of expression of arthropod salivary proteins which are difficult to obtain from natural resources for further functional studies.

The pupillary responses to light in patients with depression and normal controls were evaluated among Chinese females. Four parameters related to the pupil were assessed using a video-based pupillometer. The results showed that there were significant differences in the pupil area in the darkness and the pupil area at the peak of constriction between depressed patients and normal controls.

The purpose of this study is to clarify the relationship between systemic sclerosis (SSC) and oxidative stress markers in blood.We conducted a systematic literature search of databases, including PubMed and Embase, for studies reporting circulating oxidative stress markers in patients with SSC and controls published from 1980 to December 2015. Standardized mean differences (SMDs) and 95% confidence intervals (95%CI) were calculated.Of the 1076 articles initially retrieved, 47 were included in our meta-analysis including 12 oxidative stress markers. The concentrations of nitric oxide (SMD=0.77; 95%CI: 0.18, 1.36; p=0.01), malondialdehyde (SMD=1.63; 95%CI: 1.03, 2.24; p=0.000), asymmetric dimethylarginine (SMD=0.51; 95%CI: 0.12, 0.91; p=0.011), and ROOH (SMD=3.37; 95%CI: 0.28, 6.46; p=0.033) in the blood of patients with SSC were higher than those of the control group, whereas the concentrations of superoxide dismutase (SMD=-1.11; 95%CI:-1.57, -0.65; p=0.000) and vitamin C (SMD=-1.12; 95%CI:-1.51,-0.73; p=0.000) were lower than in the control group.The oxidative stress markers in blood for patients with SSC were aberrant, indicating the imbalanced states of oxidation and antioxidation in SSC.

Ixodid ticks are well known for spreading transmitted tick-borne pathogens while being attached to their hosts for almost 1-2 weeks to obtain blood meals. Thus, they must secrete many immunosuppressant factors to combat the hosts immune system. In the present work, we investigated an immunosuppressant peptide of the hard tick Amblyomma variegatum. This peptide, named amregulin, is composed of 40 residues with an amino acid sequence of HLHMHGNGATQVFKPRLVLKCPNAAQLIQPGKLQRQLLLQ. A cDNA of the precursor peptide was obtained from the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI, Bethesda, MD, USA). In rat splenocytes, amregulin exerts significant anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting the secretion of inflammatory factors in vitro, such as tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-), interleukin-1 (IL-1), interleukin-8 (IL-8) and interferon-gamma (IFN-). In rat splenocytes, treated with amregulin, compared to lipopolysaccharide (LPS) alone, the inhibition of the above inflammatory factors was significant at all tested concentrations (2, 4 and 8 g/mL). Amregulin shows strong free radical scavenging and antioxidant activities (5, 10 and 20 g/mL) in vitro. Amregulin also significantly inhibits adjuvant-induced paw inflammation in mouse models in vivo. This peptide may facilitate the ticks successful blood feeding and may lead to host immunotolerance of the tick. These findings have important implications for the understanding of tick-host interactions and the co-evolution between ticks and the viruses that they bear.

AIM: To assess the impact of carbon dioxide (CO2) pneumoperitoneum versus laparotomy on the expression of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) in human gastric cancer xenografts in a nude mouse model. METHODS: Nude mice were inoculated intraperitoneally with human gastric cancer cells (MKN45) to generate a xenograft mouse model of human gastric cancer. The model mice were randomly divided into three groups to undergo laparotomy, CO2 pneumoperitoneum, and anesthesia alone, respectively. Tumor growth and expression of TNF-α, IL-6 expression and NF-κB in tumor xenografts were determined. RESULTS: Total tumor weight was higher in mice undergoing laparotomy than in those undergoing CO2 pneumoperitoneum (0.72 ± 0.02 ν 0.43 ± 0.06, P < 0.05). The mRNA expression levels of NF-κB p65, TNF-α, and IL-6 were significantly higher at 24 h after laparotomy than after CO2 pneumoperitoneum (1.09 ± 0.12 ν 0.63 ± 0.07; 1.14 ± 0.11 vs 0.31 ± 0.05; 0.65 ± 0.08 ν 0.42 ± 0.04, all P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: In a xenograft mouse model of human gastric cancer, CO2 pneumoperitoneum resulted in slower tumor growth and lower expression levels of TNF-α, IL-6 and NF-κB p65 in tumor tissue than laparotomy, suggesting that laparoscopy is a minimally invasive technique in gastrointestinal oncologic surgery.

To investigate the treatment and prognosis of the patients with squamous cell carcinoma of thyroid. The clinical data of all patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the thyroid in our hospital from Dec. 1994 to Dec. 2008 were analyzed retrospectively. The overall 1-year, 3-year survival rates were 36.4% and 9.1% respectively. The median survival time was 8 months. Survival analysis showed the patients receiving surgery and postoperative radiotherapy had a better prognosis. The prognosis of squamous cell carcinoma of thyroid was poor; the patients with squamous cell carcinoma of thyroid maybe get a better prognosis by receiving surgery and postoperative radiotherapy.

To detect the expression of EGFR in different region of laryngeal tissue, and use quantitive analysis to discuss the relation between expression of EGFR and histological differentiation. Collected 36 cases of laryngeal tissue example, which be divided in to three groups based on pathobiology. Using Western Blot to detect the EGFR expression in cancer tissue, para cancer tissue and normal tissue, and combined imaging analytical technique to analyse the relation between expression of EGFR and histological differentiation. In same region of cancer tissue the expression of EGFR is different along with different tissue differentiation (P<0.05), but in normal tissue this different is not existing (P>0.05). In same tissue differentiation the expression of EGFR is different in cancer tissue, para cancer tissue and normal tissue (P<0.05). EGFR highly express in laryngeal cancer tissue, and relate with the tissue differentiation of laryngeal cancer. EGFR is an important indicator to study the emerging and progression of laryngeal cancer.
