OBJECTIVE: To investigate the differential diagnosis and treatment of acute scrotum. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the clinical characteristics of 316 cases of acute scrotum and reviewed the related literature. RESULTS: Among the total number, there were 117 cases of acute epididymitis (37.0%), 76 acute orchitis (24.1%), 39 acute periorchitis (12.3%), 23 acute scrotal infection (7.3%), 21 testicular trauma (6.6%), 17 idiopathic scrotal edema (5.4%), 16 testicular torsion (5.1%), and 7 scrotal gangrene (2.2%). Eighty-one of them underwent surgery and 235 received conservative treatment, of whom 1 with scrotal gangrene died of toxic shock for refusing surgical drainage. Those with testicular torsion all showed positive results in Prehn's test and responded well to surgery. CONCLUSION: Acute scrotum is detrimental to male health, for which early diagnosis and prompt treatment are essential.

BACKGROUND: Methods to separate the transitional epithelial cells include enzyme digestion method, tissue block method and spinning scraping method. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the best approach to culture and passage the human bladder transitional cells in vitro. METHODS: Human bladder transitional epithelial cells were cultured in MEM-F12 and KSFM media. Then the cell morphological changes, growth and proliferation were observed. The bladder transitional epithelial cells were identified by immunofluorescent staining based on the presence of uothelium specific cell markers AE1 and Uroplakin III, the latter one specifically expressed in urothelial tissue. The cells were subcultured by 4-step trypsin digestion method and tissue block replantation method, respectively. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: The cells in EME-F12 media grew well, and the cell climbing-out and cell fusion occurred earlier than cells in KSFM media. The cells were identified as transitional epithelial cells by immunofluorescence. Passage cells subcultured by trypsin digestion began to adhere to the wall at 18-24 hours after passage. The cells stopped growing after adherence. Cellapoptosis appeared after 60-72 hours. The passage cells subcultured by tissue block replantation displayed a stable and fast growth. The cell began to climb out at 24-48 hours. Cell fusion rate achieved 80% on 10-16 days. Cells began to degenerate at the fourth passage. These results demonstrate that tissue block cultivation and replantation based on DMEM-F12 is an economic and effective way to culture and subculture the human bladder transitional cells.

Background: Tyrosine kinase inhibitors are increasingly used to treat chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), but loss of complete cytogenetic response (CCyR) indicates treatment failure. Aim: To compare the efficacy of Sokal, European Treatment Outcome Study (EUTOS), and Hasford prognostic scores with 3-month and 12-month CCyR, event-free survival (EFS) and progression-free survival (PFS) in patients with chronic-phase CML (CP-CML) undergoing imatinib therapy. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the outcome of 210 patients with CP-CML treated at the First Affiliated Hospital of Anhui Medical University treated between January 2006 and December 2013. Sokal, EUTOS, and Hasford scores were compared with 3-month and 12-month CCyR, EFS, and PFS. Results: Kaplan–Meier analyses revealed that 3-month and 12-month CCyR and PFS were lower in patients with high EUTOS scores, and intermediate or high Sokal and Hasford scores (all P< 0.05). Furthermore, EFS was lower in patients with intermediate or high Sokal and Hasford scores (both P< 0.05). Hasford score (hazard ratio =2.608, 95% confidence interval: 1.473–4.617, P=0.001) was independently associated with 3-month CCyR. Conclusion: Although all three scoring systems were associated with EFS, PFS, and 3-month and 12-month CCyR in the Kaplan–Meier analyses (except EFS with EUTOS), only the Hasford score was independently associated with 3m-CCyR, while EUTOS score and Sokal score were not independently associated with any of these outcomes. © 2015 Xia et al.

AIM: To discuss mathematic relationship with academic degree of intraocular lens in aphakia. METHODS: Based on geometrical optics method, Gullstrand exact model eye (No. 1) and standard intraocular lens model eye, academic degree of intraocular lens by the mathematic relationship with corneal anterior curvature radius (r1) were deduced, and corneal posterior curvature radius (r2), corneal thickness (T), ocular visual axis (L) and effective lens position (ELP) in aphakia were analyzed. RESULTS: The theoretical value of intraocular lens (IOL) was calculated by individual corneal data of numeration that academic degree of intraocular lens in aphakia. CONCLUSION: Implanted correct IOL in aphakia, all kinds of which with refractive error can be rectified and come to correlation emmetropia. ©, 2015, International Journal of Ophthalmology (c/o Editorial Office). AIM: To evaluate the value of endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) in the diagnosis of gastrointestinal protuberant lesions and to figure out the reasons for misdiagnosis. METHODS: A total of 202 cases of gastrointestinal protuberant lesions were detected and collected from May 2012 to November 2013, of which EUS findings and pathological characteristics were studied retrospectively. RESULTS: EUS revealed 44 cases of stromal tumors, 47 cases of leiomyomas, 23 cases of external pressure, 28 cases of polyps, 11 cases of lipomas, 9 cases of heterotopic pancreas, 17 cases of inflammatory changes, 19 cases of cysts and 4 cases of phlebangioma. Of 127 cases that underwent pathological examinations, 118 were diagnosed correctly and 9 were misdiagnosed by EUS. Of the 9 misdiagnosed cases, 5 were misdiagnosed as stromal tumors (2 were gastric leiomyomas, 2 were gastric heterotopic pancreas and 1 was gastric leiomyoma with lipoma), 3 were misdiagnosed as leiomyomas (1 was gastric glomus tumor, 1 was gastric inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor and 1 was esophageal fibrovasular polyp), and 1 case of duodenal heterotopic pancreas was misdiagnosed as leiomyoma or neuroendocrine tumor. CONCLUSION: EUS plays a critical role in the diagnosis of gastrointestinal protuberant lesions; however, the value of EUS still needs to be further improved for some rare or atypical cases. © 2014 Baishideng Publishing Group Co., Limited.
