Background: Calcium citrate has a better solubility than calcium phosphate, calcium sulfate, and other calcium biomaterials. The synthetic calcium citrate has a good denseness, and stably releases calcium ions at a high efficiency during the degradation. Consequently, it may be more suitable for the filling of fracture defects, providing needed calcium ions for early fracture healing. Objective: To prepare calcium citrate biomaterials with a novel formulation based on the natural bio-mineralized oyster shells and citric acid so as to expect to get a good application in fracture healing repair. Methods: Crushing, grinding, and chemical reaction methods were used for refinement. Particle size analyzer, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy were adopted for analysis of the size distribution, composition, mineral phases, and micro-morphology. Biological characteristics were evaluated through a simulated body fluid experiment. Results and Conclusion: Oyster shell powder was reacted with saturated citric acid to produce the calcium citrate material that had uniform crystal structure and compact bonding among crystal bodies, and exhibited a certain mechanical ability. The calcium citrate material had a good crystal structure that was conductive to prolong the degradation time. The calcium citrate released calcium ions slowly, and did not produce dramatic changes in the pH value (7.20-7.46) of the surrounding in the dissolution process. With the gradual degradation of calcium citrate materials, Ca2+ concentration in solution increased gradually and stably, and ultimately achieved an appropriate concentration of 7 mmol/L, suitable for osteoblast proliferation and differentiation. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are a class of versatile gene expression regulators, participating in the regulation of gene expression at the post-transcriptional level in both physiological and pathological conditions. Gliomas are the most common brain malignancy in adults, and deregulation of microRNAs takes part in the gliomagenesis process. Here, we found that the expression of miR-1297 is significantly reduced in both glioma cell lines and clinical glioma tissues. Using the MTT assay, soft agar colony formation assay and xenograft tumor formation assay, we show that miR-1297 is a tumor suppressor microRNA in gliomas. We demonstrate that the high mobility group protein A1 (HMGA1) is the functional target of miR-1297 in glioma cells. HMGA1 significantly promotes the growth of glioma cells both in vitro and in vivo. Together, we unveil a new molecular mechanism in gliomas that may shed new light on understanding this brain malignancy. © 2016, E-Century Publishing Corporation. All rights reserved. Source

This study aimed to investigate the risk factors influencing the prognosis of patients receiving conventional fractionation radiotherapy. A retrospective analysis of clinical data from 100 patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma receiving radiotherapy was conducted. The Chi-square test was used to screen the relevant factors and Cox multiple-factor analysis was used to investigate the risk factors influencing the survival of patients. One-factor analysis results revealed that tumor stage, tumor diameter, prescription dose completion and radiotherapy regularity are related to the prognosis of nasopharyngeal carcinoma and multiple-factor analysis results revealed that tumor stage, radiotherapy dose and radiotherapy regularity are independent risk factors influencing prognosis. The prognosis of patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma receiving radiotherapy is related to tumor progression and an adequate dose of regular radiotherapy improves the prognosis of patients. Abnormal proliferation and migration of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) is closely associated with early vascular hyperplasic lesions. Toll-like receptor (TLR)-4 is a pathogen pattern recognition receptor expressed on VSMCs, and can be activated by lipopolysaccharide. Activated TLR-4 plays a promoting role in VSMCs proliferation and migration through the downstream signaling pathways including Rac1/Akt. Hydroxysafflor yellow A (HSYA) is the main component of the safflower yellow pigments, which has long been used for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases in traditional Chinese medicine. However, the effect of HSYA on VSMC proliferation and migration remains unknown. In the present study, we showed that HYSA could inhibit LPS-induced VSMCs proliferation and migration, accompanied by the downregulated levels of several key pro-inflammatory cytokines, including TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-8. We further showed that HYSA inhibited LPS-induced upregulation of TLR-4 expression as well as the activation of Rac1/Akt pathway, suggesting that HSYA inhibits LPS-induced VSMCs proliferation and migration, partly at least, via inhibition of TLR-4/Rac1/Akt pathway. Accordingly, HSYA may be used as a promising agent for prevention and treatment of vascular hyperplasic disorders. © 2015, E-Century Publishing Corporation. All rights reserved. Source

To investigate the correlation of serum specific IgE and skin prick test in allergic rhinitis patients sensitive to dust mite and the difference between the results. Data of 349 allergic rhinitis patients who had positive result in either Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus(Der p) or Dermatophagoides farinae (Der f) by serum specific IgE and skin prick test were statistically analyzed. Grades of Skin prick test and specific IgE levels were notably relevant in these two dust mites(Der p r= 0. 568, Der f r= 0. 506, P<0. 01). There was significant difference of positive rates between serum specific IgE and skin prick test in Der p(Chi2 = 11. 605, P<0. 01)but not in Der f(Chi2 =0, P>0.05). There was no correlation between positive degree of two methods and score of clinical symptoms in allergic rhinitis. Serum specific IgE and skin prick test were notably relevant in allergic rhinitis patients sensitive to dust mites. The positive rates of the two methods were different due to different allergen. Therefore, they could not substitute for each other. The level of serum specific IgE and positive degree of skin prick test could not reflect the degree of symptom in allergic rhinitis. Source
