We have reported results from the formative stage of a community health worker intervention designed to improve diabetes management among Bangladeshi patients in New York City. Trained community health workers conducted focus groups (n=47) and surveys (n=169) with Bangladeshi individuals recruited from community locations. Results indicated that participants faced numerous barriers to care, had high rates of limited English proficiency, and had low levels of knowledge about diabetes. Most participants expressed interest in participating in a community health worker intervention.

It is now clear that the transportation sector will increasingly rely on electricity and the related infrastructure needed for storage and distribution. At the same time, the source of electricity itself must not be carbon based. Rather, whenever possible, it should depend on environmentally responsible processes. In addition to their ecological benefits, aeolic and photovoltaic (PV) sources are highly scalable, and can be utilized for local generation and delivery, eliminating those energy losses normally associated with long-range grid distribution. This paper analyzes one specific type of renewable, local energy generation, applied to electric vehicle charging requirements. A PV source is explicitly posited, because solar panels can be placed above the vehicle parking space, and double as a shade provider. In the first part of this paper, the optimal requirements for overall system are derived. These will be used in the second part, in order to compare alternate power conditioning circuits for this task. © 1986-2012 IEEE.

Background Superficial chemical peels offer therapeutic results in a convenient, affordable treatment. Many clinicians use these peels in the treatment of acne and acne-prone oily skin. Objectives This article examines the evidence base that supports the widespread use of superficial peels in this setting. Methods A search of the English language medical literature was performed to identify clinical trials that formally evaluated the use of chemical peeling in active acne. Results Search of the literature revealed very few clinical trials of peels in acne (N = 13); a majority of these trials included small numbers of patients, were not controlled and were open label. The evidence that is available does support the use of chemical peels in acne as all trials had generally favourable results despite differences in assessments, treatment regimens and patient populations. Notably, no studies of chemical peels have used an acne medication as a comparator. As not every publication specified whether or not concomitant acne medications were allowed, it is hard to evaluate clearly how many of the studies evaluated the effect of peeling alone. This may be appropriate, however, given that few clinicians would use superficial chemical peels as the sole treatment for acne except in rare instances where a patient could not tolerate other treatment modalities. Conclusions In the future, further study is needed to determine the best use of chemical peels in this indication. © 2010 European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology and Venereology.

This paper presents a method to improve the rotor mechanical designs of the synchronous reluctance machine (SynRM) without considerable degradation in machine's performance. SynRM have been used in industries due to their unique merits such as fast dynamic response, and low cost. However, taking into account the major requirements of traction applications i.e., high torque and power density, low torque ripple, wide speed range, and high speed operation capability, this machine is still under investigation. Since, proper operation at high speed is a major requirement of the traction motor, the unique geometrical structure of the rotor suggests that its mechanical robustness is a challenge. Thus, prior to the final design, the effect of magnetic and rotational forces on the rotor geometry that are the source of fatigue and harmful deformation at critical points such as tangential and radial ribs need to be analyzed. At low speed, high current demand for maximum torque makes the magnetic forces dominant whereas at high speed, the rotational force dominates the others. In this work, the performance of a SynRM equipped with transversally laminated anisotropic (TLA) rotor with different geometries are investigated and compared while the proposed method is used. It is shown that, although the machine's proper magnetic and mechanical performance is required for an optimal design, these aspects need to be analyzed simultaneously due to their mutual effect. © 2014 IEEE.
