The effects of the impact energy, the sphere area, and the thickness of WC-Co substrate and polycrystal diamond (PCD) layer on the shock resistance of polycrystalline diamond compacts button were tested by using CEAST9340 shock testing machine with high periodic fatigue loading. Then finite-element analysis were carried out to study the impacts of PCD layer thickness on the shock resistance of spherical crown button. SEM was used to observe the morphology of sample fracture. The results show that the impact crushing rate of spherical crown button increases with increasing impact energy and decreases with increasing thickness of cemented carbide. With the same amount of impact energy, the impact crushing rate increases with decreasing sphere surface area. The shock resistance of spherical crown button decreases with increasing thickness of cemented carbide and decreasing thickness of WC-Co substrate. 14 mm and 16 mm diameter button insert can only partially meet low air pressure requirement and will fail high air pressure requirement.

To improve the PDC bit's drilling performance, PDC is used to abrade rock in the lathe, and the effect of cutting angle on PDC bit's drilling performance is researched. Under the same stress, same rub distance, and five different group of cutting angle, PDC abrasion volume are measured respectively. How the cutting angle affect the bit's drilling performance is analyzed with FEA (Finite Element Analysis). The results indicate that, the smaller the cutting angle, the bigger the stress; the bigger the abrasion volume, the larger the abrasion volume in the same node of the PDC, and the shorter the using life of bit. That is to say, there is a best cutting angle for PDC bit.

Contraposing the problems of low coring rate in fractured formation and other complex formations, advanced lateral jet wire-line coring diamond bit has been designed on the foundation of common impregnated diamond bit, and then it has been put into the field drilling test. This kind of bits is composed of common bit part with lateral advanced water nozzles and advanced teeth part. The tests show that advanced lateral jet wireline coring bits work very well in above-mentioned complex formations. The total coring recovery rate at the trial hole is greatly increased, which can reach at 94.1%; and the gathering rock (ore) core mostly remain the native state and relatively complete, which means the rock (ore) core erosion from drilling fluid have been stopped.
